was wondering if there were any good pen stores or anything along those lines out there. Will be out there saturday. Tried to use a search engine but I was surprised to not find much for how big of a city it was. No websites but a few numbers so I might just have to call.

I am from Grand Rapids and when I go pen shopping the first place I stop is Detroit. LOLOLOL.

However, Since the Montblanc Boutique in the Sommerset Collection closed, the first stop lately has been Chicago.

If you are REALLY REALLY wanting to look at pens in Grand Rapids you can try Groskoph's:

There are no, and I mean NO, luxury stores that thrive in Grand Rapids because of it's dutch heritage. It has driven me nuts the years I have lived here having to drive across the state for some retail therapy and pampering. My wife and I sometimes talk about opening a small pen and stationary shop downtown. Then we look at each other and laugh and laugh and laugh. Then we drive to Detroit.

Heh. I know someone who grew up in a Grand Rapids suburb and now lives in Evanston. I was going to say Chicago was the nearest, but I'm glad a local said it first. I hope Chicago is holding onto that one pen store. Manhattan is down to what, one now?

You can't throw a rock without hitting a microbrewery here. They even have one in Rockford right next to the rail trail now. My bike rides are never going to be the same.

Grand Rapids has not been able to support a B & M store.

At one time there was a Paradise Pen in one of the malls: very short-lived.

Typewriter Sales, on East Fulton, had a selection of pens and ink. It too closed in the last several years.

I've been meaning to check out Groskopfs for a while because of this thread and finally got a chance today. I wasn't expecting to find much to my taste (read: fairly unrefined) but was pleasantly surprised that alongside the more expensive luxury items they now have a pretty broad selection of Kawecos. Not much in the bottled inks, but it was sure nice to find a pen i wanted in my home town.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
