Hello all,

A couple of things in this story I'd like to update....

I remembered the surfactant: Dow Triton X-100, (a foam inhibiting non-ionic surfactant - quite acidic).

I also want to send out a special "thank you" to James Partridge, (of Pear Tree Pens), who was a retailer who went out of his way helping me set up the "business end" of my business - with ordering spread sheets, etc.

I also want to say a special "thank you" to my parents, family and friends, who served as an outstanding support system. :)

I'd also like to thank Welch for dredging up this story :D - it was refreshing to share it with all of you; I was quite depressed for a little while when this whole venture tanked. Now I can look back on it with laughter.

I've already thanked the gang here at FPN, but I'll thank them again one more time for their support and encouragement through the whole process - then and now.

I also want to thank God for giving me what I needed, (in many different ways), so that I could play with inks for a while. :)

Before this starts sounding like an award presentation, I'm going to step down... besides, the collar on this tuxedo itches.

All the best & God bless,

Sean :)

Nice to see all those ink custom ink loving people over here with much experience!

I have just cooked up my first batch on ink,and it seems to get much attention throughout my friends and family along.

Can anyone name some beta testers for my ink?

It's honestly a shame that your venture into the ink manufacturing business didn't turn out so well, and it's perfectly understandable that you were depressed about it by the way, but poop happens from time to time. I'm just glad for you that you can now look back on the whole incident with a smile on your face.

I wish I were interested in FPs seven years ago! I missed the whole thing. Anyway, I'm currently in the process of looking for scans of the inks from your catalogue (no luck so far). From what I can tell, they were really well received.

Bah, the price of being late to the party :P

I'm taking a year off after college before pursuing my Master's, and I may or nay not try for a similar venture. It's doubtful, but I kinda really want to, haha. Anyway, if ever you get back in the game, Mr. Sean, please count me as one of those willing to do a review of your ink!

Best wishes, and cheers!

Kevin

Organics seem to have a nice start, there is some fellas in Paris that are 'new to the scene'...and well recommended here.

$$$$ + knowledge + drive....in the Golden Age of Inks in a market that is over-saturated.... ...I advise buying kegs of single malt instead.

I have over Euro 50 inks....and have not really touched the Noodler-Private Reserve or Diamine inks.

That 50 is the established main land Continental inks only and I need the other 50 of the 250-300 inks.

There are 400 Noodler inks, 250 Diamine inks, lots of inks from Japan....the new Organics and those folks in Paris who have a good mailing system of foil bags so you can put it in your inkwells....cheaper than bottling it.

Pharmisistis is making iron gall inks...small batch.

I'd think mixing inks would be as much fun and lots cheaper than trying to start an ink company.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
