Fountain Pens

Hi Everyone!

I'd like to ask your opinion on what brand of fountain pen I should use to practice writing. I'm planning to buy one but I'm under budget and I don't know what I should buy. Been eyeing sheaffer, parker and lamy. Can you recommend brands that are easy to use and at the same time affordable?

:)

Thanks,

Hannah

Hello Hannah. Greetings from northern California and a warm welcome to FPN. It's great to have you here with us

A couple to good starter pens (and quite affordable) might be either the Pilot 78G or the Sheaffer No Nonsense fountain pen.

These are both inexpensive and reliable pens that write very well.

Best of luck and, again, welcome.

Hi Hannah and :W2FPN:

We certainly can give you advise about which pen would be a good choice.

First advice: open a new topic in the "First stop...." subforum, and pose this question, and add some more information, like:

What is your budget.

How is your normal writing (large, small)

Do you have big or small hands

Where will you use the pens

Are there any likes/dislikes you have right away? (eg no black pens, or not too frivolous, things like that)

That way we can better help you.

Welcome to the Fountain Pen Network!

There are some Chinese brands (Jinhao, Hero, etc.) that make nice pens that can be bought for under $5.

Welcome, Hannah !

Tell us a bit about yourself, and what you seek in a fountain pen. They are often personal items.

Let's select one right for you.

The Sheaffer No Nonsense is a good pen with which to start as some are sold in sets that include multiple nibs.

Welcome to FPN! : )

HI Hannah and welcome to the forum. I'm new here and certainly not an expert so take anything I offer with a bucket of salt. I have found several nice writers at xfountain pens for very good prices. As Sasha said it is a personal choice that could be informed by some of the reasons you are looking for a pen. I am sure that someone here will be able to point you in the right direction. This group is friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable.

You have come to the right place.

Stu

I am new here, know nothing, but love writing with a fountain pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
