Vintage Aurora Hastil Repair Question

Greetings Everyone-

I am new here (just joined) and fairly new to fountain pens and forums in general.

I have a repair question and am grateful for any help and advice. I recently bought a vintage Aurora Hastil and have discovered that the nib turns in the section (I think that is what it is called) and am guessing that this is not good. Is this repairable? If so, would sending it to Aurora be the best option or is there somewhere else that can fix this?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Thanks quinden very much for the info! It seems that is not the problem then. The pen writes for a little and then dries up-I thought it was because of this. When I got the pen, it still had a dried cartridge in it, possibly from a long time ago. I flushed it out a few times and then saw a recent post on FPN and followed the advice to suspend the nib in a glass of water overnight. I did that too and it still is the same. I haven't tried ammonia yet though. Any thoughts on anything else I can try are greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to get to the feed on this pen to clean it. I have absolutely no experience with such things...

Thanks!

Hmmm... I am not too sure about the feed, to be honest. I would continue with the water and then use a pen flush solution, like Rapido-eze or JB's perfect pen flush, if you can find that. A dilute solution of ammonia would probably be good also, but I have never used it.

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

+1 on the Rapido-eze pen flush. It really can help. I had a P51 that was very plugged up when I got it, flushed and flushed and still was balky. A couple of days with cycling the pen cleaner through at about 50% strength did the job.

Congrats on the Hastil. A classic design. I'd like to find one of those. Love my vintage Aurora 88, it has a very distinct nib feel.

I got and used the Rapido-eze and a lot of red came out! Now the pen is writing well, but the new problem is that it is leaking. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It may be that because the nib turns in the section, that that is the problem, but in the above link that you so kindly sent, someone there with a Hastil said that their nib turns and they have no leaking problems, so I'm not sure but really appreciate any help or advice.

If it needs to be repaired, is there someone here that can/would do it, or is sending it to Aurora the best thing to do?

Thanks and sorry for so many questions...

I think the ink leakage is probably related to the nib turning. I'm not sure of any at-home fixes, but I think Aurora does still offer the Hastil, so you might check with the US representative for Aurora (Kenro, if I recall correctly). I am not sure of any experts who specialize in Aurora, especially modern/near-modern cartridge fillers, but you might send an email to Ron Zorn at Main Street Pens to see what he can do for you!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
