Need Input On Pen Choice

Recommended Posts

Hello, first post here. I am looking to purchase a fountain pen and considering my budget, shape of pen and other personal preferences I narrowed the selection down to three pens:

Diplomat Traveller, Kaweco Student, Nemosine Fission, of which the latter I cannot find in Europe. I intend to use the selected pen everyday so it must not leak or be overly sensitive. I would appreciate suggestions based on comparing between the three.

Thanks in advance.

I can only speak to the Diplomat. I have several and I find their quality outstanding--you really shouldn't experience any leaks. The Kaweco also has an excellent reputation.

I'd encourage you to also look at the TWBSI 580. Their customer service is outstanding.

I have a Nemosine and it is quite a well made pen and a smooth writer.

You can't go wrong with the Kaweco Student, it's a great pen (and great nib) for the money. And it won't crack or fall apart after a month.

I'd second the recommendation for a TWSBI 580 (or used 540). I had a Kaweco and the Medium nib was very nice and smooth (although it was too broad for my liking). I had my first experience with a Nemosine (the model is the Singularity) and I can't recommend them. It leaked (rather severely, actually) and bled through my jeans pocket onto the outside of them. I have a video about it on YouTube. If you're interested in my thoughts on the pen, I'd be glad to share a link with you.

I appreciate the responses, actually I swapped the Traveller for the Esteem as a choice, since it is not that much more expensive. I have watched Stephen Brown's reviews (of the kaweco student and nemosine singularity, he mentions the slight leak too) and I'd like to watch more reviews if you have any suggestions, including your own heymatthew.

The reviews here on FPN are always good resources as well....

TWSBI Diamond 540. Original retail price was $50 USD. You should be able to find one for less.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
