Vegan Alternative To Shellac

Thanks guys. Is it considered ok to 'cold message' someone on this site? I'd like to message Fountainbel but I don't want to break etiquette.

Go for it. I don't know how to contact someone other than to contact them :) .

Sure, nothing against a friendly cold message :) might be frowns against unsolicited spamming trying to sell counterfeit snakeoil but that's just a personal view :P

So I went looking for a good non-corrosive RTV, and had a long conversation with the folks at Loctite. There are other forms of RTV curing materials, but the one recommended is a Alcoxy RTV. This releases alcohols - mostly a combination of methyl and ethyl alcohol. Loctite makes one called 5040 self leveling RTV. It's a bit pricey though, and you'll need to order it. I found it at a number of sites, including Amazon.

Another possibility is Loctite 598, which is an oxime cure RTV, and is much cheaper than the 5040. You can find it on ebay. This releases methyl-methyl keytones, but the quantity would be rather small in this application.

If you're not sure about what a product releases, take a look at the technical data sheets. There's a wealth of information for those who take the time to dig for it.

thanks Ron! Yeah Loctite makes a lot more specialised products for industry than most ppl know about. I use RTV in a few things like O2 sensors & fishtanks, neither like acids. ;)

I occasionally hang around the industrial adhesives supply depot to browse their catalogues.

Once found a bottle of Loctite cyanoacrylate with carbon fibre reinforcement... fantastic stuff, gripped like crazy & could bridge small gaps.

Best score is Loctite threadlock in a gluestick = BEST EVER IDEA! It can't spill, so my first tube has lasted years. Still using same today.

One thing the MSDs never tell is how to get the product off again cleanly :(

Hence my first question to OP - do you ever want to disassemble the join again, let alone without damaging the underlying surfaces from subsequent reuse/reassembly. :ninja: plenty of synthetic adhesives out there, most are oneshot though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
