Sweet, Potentially Expensive Mistake

Recommended Posts

I already have 3 three 149s, ranging from circa '70 to early '90. Heard great things about older version, but always been able to resist the temptation.

Even if I prefer large pens, just out of curiosity I have been tempted by a (affordable, slightly battered, user grade) 142 from the '50 and now I WANT REALLY BAD a 149 from the same period.

So beware, curiosity kills also the budget... Here it is with my oldest 149.

Don't forget the 144s and 146s as well as the amazing 254 and 264s. Then there are the 24x pens and the 34x pens as well.

nice! b nib?

OB, slightly flexy.

I have a couple on Pelikan (400 - 400n - 400nn) with very similar nib (BB and OBB), and I think this and those are the funniest nibs I ever used.

My only other MB is a -32 (OBB) that is very nice, but in another league.

I try not to think about a MB collection.

Based on your preferences, I can say with some certainty that a MB collection is in your future. Welcome to the club! ;)

I had a 146 in a similar condition and I restored it to mint condition with this polish: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Precious-Resin-PEN-POLISH-for-Montblanc-Meisterstuck-/170656518945 (no affiliation). I found it expensive, but it made my pen look new.

The pen I write with, is the pen I use to sign my name.

Dangerous suggestion, I fear.

The seller says "Ideally suited for the current Montblanc .. made from precious resin...! Do not use this polish on celluloid or hardrubber pens !".

I may be wrong but I assumed my 142 (all of them actually, as they were produced for a very short time from '48 to '54, AFAIK) is made in celluloid, not "precious resin" (that I suspect is some sort of PMMA).

Have a look here for a much better (and expensive) specimen.

Nah, Enrico, I think you're better off with the one you've already got.

Most of my pens are slightly beaten up/user grade - except my 142, which is mint.

As a result, I hardly ever use it! Scared of staining the pretty window.

Enjoy.

Yes, you're right, much better a beaten up/user grade I can use without fear...

And I really do not want a pen like this.

When you have served your 'resin apprentiship' you can then get into the metal ones then it really does get a tad costly

I consider myself VERY lucky because I really do not like metal bodied pens (well, could make an exception for a skeleton...).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
