Black Pearl Celebration

I was outside and thought the ambient light in my atrium might be ideal for capturing the character of my Laban. It's hard to do under artificial light or bright sunlight.

so, this isn't a "beauty" shot but it's still nice. By far one of the most intriguing of my pens. And for $50. The nib is rather pretty too, i'll try to take a pic of that soon.

I always forget you have that one, it's so purty. Reminds me of the Pelikan SF. I'd like to see a pic of the nib.

Very interesting pen, KCat.

I was eyeing the Laban line just before I got swallowed by the vintage bug. They seem very interesting, price-wise. What do you think of the quality ?

The Laban acrylic is not translucent. it's hard to explain. it has depth - so you feel like you are seeing "into" the material, but you can't see *through* it.

well, I like the nib a lot. It's a nail like so many modern nibs but it was super smooth OOTB. Writes quite wet - my medium writes more like a broad. The nib is large as is the pen (compared to my typical tastes) and the section itself is quite fat. But it still fits in one of those ink vials! :P

it is very lightweight, very lovely to look at and it came with a good quality converter.

I have only one grip and I'm not sure what if anything can be done about it - which is probably something I should post in AtE above..

somehow - recently - the section became scored as if there were threads there. hmm... might need to take a pic for that to make sense. The only thing I can see is that the cap band wraps around the lip to the inside of the cap and is rather sharp. but there should be plenty of room unless someone was putting the cap back on at an angle? I haven't tried to buff it out. I'll snap a pic and see if Dennis, et. al. have a suggestion for how it happened and why.

so.. ultimately though - IMO the resin pens are priced fairly for the quality. I've also seen the little Expression which is brass-lined and heavier but a very nice quality purse pen.

KCat,

If that isn't a beauty shot, I don't know what is. I would say it is better than average. Still, I would have like to see it with the clip facing up. Just like the tortoise in your avatar. So, how is that shot of it uncapped as you promised

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
