I have 3, all with O3B nibs, one in each trim. Ive tried many other pens including the fancy stuff like writers edition, limited edition etc but keep coming back to the 149 for the girth/feel and that nib. The size/ weight of the pen suits me perfectly.

None. Looking for a 149 in platinum or rose gold. Just waiting to place a classified WTB. Prefer a fine nib.

One, a 1980's tuned by John Mottishaw that came with a F nib, which John Mottishaw replaced with an O3B signature nib.

Hello everyone,

I currently have one 149 GT with a Fine nib, and also waiting in the mail for a 149 90th anniversary with an OBB nib and another one, a 149 Platinum with an OBBB I bought from Appelboom (the only place online where I found an OBBB). So excited to try the broader nibs, they are going to be my first broader nibs.

By the way, the three are modern 149's.

I got hooked with OBBB's once I checked the "Montblanc Red Gold 149 Obbb" thread from Tom Kellie, such beautiful nibs and gorgeous pictures.

Yes, the inestimable Mr Kellie heads a cadre of big nib types whose combined efforts have led many an unsuspecting young man and oldphart into the broad side, bringing them much joy I might add, but causing Montblanc untold hours of heartburn trying to provide perfect O3B nibs to converts all over the planet

Just to add clarity, O3B nibs on a 149 are available as a free exchange on a new purchase from any authorized dealer. That said I like Joost and Appelboom.

Hi zaddick, that should be correct, the problem is: when I bought the 149 90th anniversary at a Montblanc boutique in México (where I'm from), they told me they couldn't deliver such nib, only OBB, so I asked for that nib and I am waiting, 3 months they said to deliver; later on, I found Appelboom on the internet and realized they had in stock OBBB's!, that's when I bought the Platinum which I'm waiting in the mail, this week should be delivered.

I will complain to the Montblanc Boutique though, when my OBBB arrives I will show them!

Yes, my boutique in San Francisco had an employee that told me O3B was not possible. I told her to order it anyway. Guess who was right. :)

Boutique staff are often not as well informed as some of us MB users here on FPN. It is too bad they gave you incorrect information. I hope they make an effort to make it up to you.

~ Ha Ha!

I hope that Ghost Plane and Pravda happen to read these latest posts in this thread. They'll share my delight in the continuing interest in the broader nibs.

After enjoying the terrific thread started by zaddick about broad nibs, he absolutely is the knowledgable dean of broad nib enthusiasts.

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/325098-welcome-to-the-broad-side/page-1

Ghost Plane is the indefatigable inspiration of we broad nibbers, and her cookies are the finest.

Pravda has outstanding pens of the finest sort, adding very broad nibs to ensure that they're one-of-a-kind.

Yours truly actually loves EF nibs and 144 Classique pens, but is beguiled by the beauty of OBBB nib writing, hence I add photos whenever possible.

There are two frustrations about OBBB nibs which regularly recur.

First, there's the perception that an OBBB nib won't accommodate smaller handwriting.

As my experience has been that there's no issue if OBBB nibs are used on quality paper, I post handwriting samples to show that an OBBB nib doesn't result in an inky, blotted mess.

Second, as zaddick has noted above, Montblanc boutique staff frequently are unfamiliar with the OBBB nib exchange option for 149 fountain pens.

As there's been an ‘OBBB boom’ of sorts over the past year, Montblanc and its boutiques around the globe must wonder what's going on.

I'd better maintain a low profile, as I don't want to be blamed for their increased OBBB production.

BTW: Immediately above da vinci has mentioned three 149s.

To my great surprise, this evening I found that da vinci has a superb collection of broader-nibbed 144s, with a newly posted image, which is of considerable interest to me.

My experience has been that boutique employees are quite reluctant to do anything that involves actual work.

I have a single 149 that has a mother of pearl derby/cap and a F nib. Thinking about having the nib swapped for an EF. We'll see...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
