Noodler's Ahab Flex Modification

So now I added "get a Dremel with 600 attachments" to my shopping list! In addition to modifying at least one of my Ahabs, I found a dip pen nib that fits my no-name German pen, but it's too long. The Dremel will be a necessary tool in my kit if I'm going become a nib fiddler, ah, nib tweaker, oh, you know what I mean!

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Wow! I'm impressed by the amount of flex you are getting with your modified nib! I just did Pterodactylus's mod on my Konrad and it's already greatly improved.... but now you've got me wanting to try yours too! Thank you for sharing.

Any chance of you posting photos showing an unmodified nib next to the new superflex nib? I'm just wondering because it looks like you removed metal from side to side and from shoulder to tip, in addition to the notch on either side. Actually, it looks like you removed the shoulders entirely. I'm looking forward to doing this myself!

I'm sooo tempted to do this, but as I'm favouring my Kaweco Sport with FPR flex nib and thinking of selling my Konrad, I probably won't... But I'll definitely be trying out a similar bit of modification to a FPR nib once my new order arrives.

Awesome!

Finally got around to doing a bit of fine tuning for the horrendously ugly Ahab nib my hands produced.

It's the same one as in my picture above, but it's in a very stained Konrad demonstrator now. I had to heat-set the feed to fit it.

have you thought about dremelling the inside of the nib rather than the outside? This way you won't have to worry too much about the final finish.

By the way, the FPR pen is pretty bad. I tried it stock, but not planning on keeping or modding the nib. Will eventually donate the pen.

Now looking for the Ahab.

I wasn't even trying to thin the nib. All that was caused by unsteady hands… :D

It's the way I prefer my nibs—a visual equivalent to Tom Waits' voice. :lticaptd:

I'm glad this post came up again. There's another on on the same subject, and I think this one has better photos. I've been tentatively shaving away and am getting close to what I want. This is easy enough to do, so I hope Nathan sees this and at least considers offering a more flexible nib choice than is available currently with the Ahab/Konrad/Nib Creeper models.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
