Pelikan M20 Silvexa - Information Sought

Hello everyone. I was hoping that some of you aficionados might be able to help me understand the history of my new pen better. I've Googled extensively but I cannot find much information about it and what niche it filled in the Pelikan family. I just received a Pelikan M20 Silvexa that I purchased from eBay. It has a black body and a silver cap with a blue ink window. It measures 5.24 inches long capped and 5.79 inches when posted with a weight of 0.6 ounces. It is a piston filler with a 14K gold EF nib. The only markings are around the band of the cap and state "+ Pelikan 20 Silvexa + Germany." Some pics below. Thank you in advance for your responses.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Hello

Sorry about being a bit too late to follow this thread))))

I have a M20 Silvexa, too.

What exactly is a silver star version?

some interesting reading here too

the "silver star" is the version with fully brushed alloy on cap and barrel

the numbering on these models is P4XX (P stands for cartridge, in German)

I own a P478 Silverstar, but note this is not a Silvexa, the Silvexa has a differently shaped clip

This is a P488 Silvexa Silverstar (note the clip shape)
from P478 to 488 the clip seems to change to the same clip used in the M20, M30.

Besides being a cartridge filler. Is this the same shape as say a Lamy 2000? The pens look similar to my eyes.

well, it looks similar, consider that these originate in the late 60s, early 70s, so they all were influenced by the Parker 51, Aurora 88 hooded design, which then inspired the Lamy 2000.

The characteristic of P4XX series is the triangular nib and the blue ink window

The M20 is a mid range model of the product line succeeding the 100N, 140, 400NN line around 1965. M stands for piston filling (mechanic) and silvexa was the name of the cap material. There was also a MK line with black plastic caps and a P line of cartridge fillers. The above links will give you plenty of information. In my experience, these pens are better than their reputation.

"these pens are better than their reputation."

I confirm, I have owned a P474 since the late 60s until at least 30 years later (when I sadly lost it...) and for a long time it has been my one and only fountain pen that has taken me through high school and university.

Never failed once, I found out about hard starts only many years later when I started collecting other fountain pens...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
