The changes to FPN: what do they mean?

I first came to FPN for the knowledge and the community, but I love the resources the marketplace provides for sellers. So I am more than happy to contribute to keep this place running. It would be a shame to lose this huge archive of FP information.

I buy, very rarely sell, but do enjoy all the reading and drooling.

However, can someone explain how I can't access emoticons.....I'm using my iPad or iPod, depending on where I'm sitting and how good my eyes are.......but i don't get that menu bar thingy to even choose if i want them.

Is it because although I'm a 'goldie' and have been here for centuries I haven't contributed (yet)?

Hugs, and 'well done' pats on the backs of all the boffins!!!!

Hi Chirs,

It is a bit unfortunate, but the formatting options on iPad and iPhone are not supported with the current editor, due to stability problems so I have been told. The developers are working on it, for the next major release early next year, but in the mean time you can use the text short-cuts for the emoticons - that will work.

I will make a list of those, once I've got them all working again (some don't, currently).

Emoticons: OK see if this works. I kept having a problem because when you type the name of an emoticon it turns into the emoticon when you post. So I took the whole list of working FPN emoticons and converted it to an image below. You just type in the one you want in your message and when you post it should convert to the emoticon automatically.

I will make another post in a second from my iPad to make sure this works as described.

Don't know where else to put this question, but can anyone tell me the difference between gold, silver and bronze members?

Yes, of course.

When you register here, you become a Bronze Member. After 30+ days of registration, you automatically become a Silver Member, and if you have 30+ posts to your name in all forums but Chatter, in addition to having been registered for 30+ days, you will become a Gold Member.

With each upgrade you can do a little more, like have access to PMs, to Upload for hosting images shared on FPN, and you will be able to post Classifieds (Gold Member).

Here's a question -

We used to be able to adjust the appearance/settings of the forum so it had a particular theme for each user.

Is that still possible with these changes?

Lots of wants, limited funds!

We used to be able to adjust the appearance/settings of the forum so it had a particular theme for each user.

We had a few very nice skins, indeed, or themes as they are called now. This was one of the reasons why we waited as long as we did with upgrading the board software. As of 3.2.x - we were using 3.1.4, the old skins were not compatible anymore with the board software, and there were really major changes in layout and structure of the software, requiring a major rewrite of the skins.

This was true again for 3.3.x, and again for the current version, 3.4.x, with us being on 3.4.4 right now. We couldn't afford to wait any longer, due to the version we were on no longer being supported, and security issues which could no longer be updated anymore as a result.

The original author of the skins decided to start a new business, something completely different, so we were really stuck. However, as we speak, the skins are being rewritten after all by the person who acquired the rights to the skin software and designs, and they will reappear. We just have to sit it out for a while, as it does indeed require a major rewrite, and a lot of puzzles to be solved to make it work properly. The first skin is being worked on, since a few weeks, and that will likely take the longest. The Board Index (Forums main page) has been done for 99% for this first skin (Library), so now for the rest of it, and then any other skins :). We will likely add any skins as soon as they have been completed.

That would be really nice as I like books, so I miss my library....

Rewritten by the person who acquired the rights...... I think I happen to know him.

Give him my best wishes and tell him he's welcome to come and have a good coffee and chat.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
