Hi, I'm also new here.

I found this site through the Wikipedia article on fountain pens.

In all honesty I'm not at all knowledgeable about fountain pens, but I like using them ;)

My first pen was a cheap Lamy actually, it went for about ¥3000 here in Japan, but it worked quite well. I got an Aurora after that, which was total junk (also cheap though.)

2 years ago on a trip to Guam, I found a Japanese department store that was going out of business. I got 2 Mont Blanc fountain pens for about $110, one I currently use, the other is sitting in pristine condition (the one I use is in my avatar.) You can probably tell where my username comes from

For fountain pens I always use Mont Blanc (haven't tried anything else) and for ball points I use Cross (my personal favorite.)

Anyway, nice to meet everyone. I don't think I'll be posting much (mostly reading) but I look forward to seeing everyone out there.

Welcome to the boards.

I don't post much either, but won't hesitate if I need info, I find the articles on this board save me having to ask any questions.

There is always so much new information on these boards, I feel like I am missing something if I don't check them out every single day

Welcome, 4810! Oh, there is a whole wonderful adventure for you now! There are so many wonderful fountain pens, so many different types to try. And in Japan, you have access to some of the best manufacturers around: Platinum, Sailor, Namiki, Nagaya...

And then, if you're interested in even more adventure, there's the world of vintage pens to explore. They're also wonderful writers: different than modern pens, but that just adds to their interest. And prices are very appealing. You get a lot more for your money when you buy older pens. (I don't know how else I could have bought a sturdy pen with a big 14K gold nib for $25!)

So welcome again!

Hi 4810,

First of all, welcome to the fountain pen site for fountain pen nuts (the real reason why it is called fpn, obviously :D)!

Hi, I'm also new here.

Nice tip, that, I didn't know we were listed there.

In all honesty I'm not at all knowledgeable about fountain pens, but I like using them  ;)
None of us really is, but the little bit we do know, we try to share here, and we all do that because we love using them indeed. It's a great hobby, IMO.

No, I couldn't guess :D. I saw the number 4810, and the only thing I could think about: hey, what a coincidence, the number is the same as the height of the Mont Blanc .
For fountain pens I always use Mont Blanc (haven't tried anything else) and for ball points I use Cross (my personal favorite.)
They are good pens, both, but hang around here for a while, and I'm sure you'll try a few more brands :D, or, dare I say, vintage pens even... :D

Nice to meet you, too!

Welcome to our little home away from home.

Lamy makes some good pens. I've heard that cheap Auroras can be anything from fantastic to garbage. I've not actually tried any Auroras, though.

MB - well, of course there's a brand that polarizes the pen community significantly.

Now - we need to get you to try Sailor, Namiki, Pelikan, and a few vintage pens. Watch out for Wim, he'll try to convince you to go for Stipulas.

Welcome and have fun on the site.

Same here.

Grab a seat, 4810.

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

Hi KCat,

Watch out for Wim, he'll try to convince you to go for Stipulas.

Who, me? Why on earth would I now? That way there will be less of them for me!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
