WHAAAATTTTTT???????? FOUR MONTHS?????????

Sheeeesh, I might as well hang it up. LOL! Medicalcpa, that would be astounding after 4 YEARS. You are a gifted writer, and you scare me man. :clap1: :clap1: :clap1: Lord he'p me...what will you be producing in a couple of years. That is seriously beautiful!

Thanks for the compliment. It took eight attempts to produce that. But speaking of being "gifted," have you seen the train wreck that is my attempt at Spencerian? Lol.

KEN!!!! Oh my LORD! hahahaha...that's just "crazy-stupid-good". I love the colors and the Celtic knotwork stuff. One of the things on my "bucket list" is to see the Book Of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels, so you know I'm a big fan of Celtic design. Lord only knows how you do that. I'd love to be a little fly on the wall and watch you create these works. Geeez, thanks so much for posting. ---more, more more... :clap1: :clap1: :clap1:

You write something nice enough, people don't care about the handwriting. You can't write anything nice enough... you steal from Yeats! It works, I tell you!

Woah, there is no end to talent on here! Here's my minor contribution, a vignette of a word. Obviously I can't write in anything except muddled up italic script.

There ain't nothin' wrong with this whatsoever. I totally enjoyed the poem and the writing! I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we'd love to see more people step out and do "their thing" in their normal handwriting.

One thing about it...everyone on here will have an appreciation for each and every posting!

It's great! I love italics. I love the script you did with the italics too. Nice ink color.

And the idea with the little cloud and the falling rain was oh-so-nice! Very creative!

I'm so enjoying this...I can't even tell you guys and gals how much I'm loving it!

Here is something I knocked out on my lunch break...it's really not very good and a rush job.

I used food coloring and water to make the swirly background colors. I didn't have time to let it dry because I was on my lunch break, so I think that's why the writing tended to bleed. I have been wanting to try experimenting with abstract random background colors as a way of adding color, and making unique little things. I placed a piece of "textured" glass on top of it for the photo.

Not too good...but here it is anyway....

This isn't a direct copy, but is written in the style of the engravings in "The Universal Penman".

Oh man...hahahaha. KEN!!!! Sheesh, if you were alive in another century, Bickham would have some of your plates in his book!

Seriously? I mean seriously...you actually penned this? How can you do that. I know I'm a little star-struck, but come on. This would astound anybody. Do you use more than one pen to produce something like this? Surely you must? Some broad nib for the word Knowlege...and how many others for all that flourishing? How do you keep everything so balanced...the flourishes are not symetrical, and are not even the same flourishes on each side, yet they sure "appear" symetrical.

I can't get my head around that, and there is no use in trying that at my level...but I'd be happy just to know the "mechanics" and how you go about laying out something like that. The "body text" of the paragraphs is just like the Universal Penman stuff...I've tried to mess with that, and it looked awful. Worse than the horribly off-slanted inconsistent mess I posted on this thread. LOL!

Thanks Ken. I can't even tell you how I look forward to seeing your stuff.

Look at the deep shades of his flourishes. That's where the balance comes from. He has two very deep shades on the left, but three on the right. He has a dark capital letter at the left, but more somewhat shaded strokes on the right. The overall effect is one of balance. It's like how if you have a teeter-totter, you have to put two skinny kids on one side to make up for the kid who has a hershey's bar twice a day on the other end...

I gotta get practicing is all I can say. I can't even maintain a blasted consistent slant or consistent shaded stroke weight in my letters. I need to get cognizant and more self-critical. "Good enough" is not good enough. (i.e., when my mom and my wife tell me how nice it looks, its not necessarily brutal honesty). LOL!

I gotta adjust my attitude and re-do it until I have it right. Consistently right.

This is such an inspiring thread. I'm loving all the entries.

Ken - your work is always a joy to look at.

Ooh, I like this thread already. This was done recently in response to a request on a subreddit to which I subscribe. I consider it one of the best things I've done since I started calligraphy almost 4 months ago (I cannot believe it's been 4 months already!).

I love this Uncial - this is my favorite so far. Thanks for sharing this.

I'll share something from a while ago - this composition is made using the names of Allah, written in Diwani script, arranged within a stylized rendering of the word 'Allah'.

This is a great thread, and amazing idea! I will post some quotes (inspirational, my favorite) later on.. And periodically.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."

-John Quincy Adams

"Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it will get you the right ones."

-John Lennon

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
