Platinum Rivière Pe-500

Finally received my Platinum PE-500 in the mail today from Japan. For those who don't know, it's a pen made by Platinum back in the 1980s. I've seen a couple reviewed on this site but I was attracted to this model because of a few noticeable difference between this one and the others I've seen. Namely the 14k WG nib and the branding on the body which features an R instead of the normal Platinum stylized P. I don't have a converter for it yet so I've only been able to dip it, but so far it writes well with a nice little but of flex. I'll do a full review once I've had sufficient time to use it. For now I just wanted to show it off because I'm really excited about it. :) I'm wondering if anyone else knows any more information about the model and the differences between it and the others which seem more common. I've only been able to find one or two japanese sites where the pen is mentioned.

Doesn't anyone know anything about this pen? I have one just like it: 14k white gold nib and the "R" instead of "P" on the cap.

I got it yesterday and haven't inked it up yet, but will soon.

Here's a (not so good) photo of mine together with a Platinum pocket pen that I also got yesterday.

As far as I know apart from the original manufacturer in Japan, Platinum has also licensed a Taiwanese factory to produce fountain pen nib that only sold locally in Taiwan (the so called Taiwanese version Platinum). The one with the "R" is the original Japanese "Reviere" pen while the one with a "P" on the cap is the Taiwanese version of it (model number) PE-600. For the Taiwanese version don't know if the whole pen is made in Taiwan or only part of it but

I heard that at least the nib is made in Taiwan. Needless to say, the Japanese version is more valuable than the Taiwanese version.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
