I love the tartan look and quality that went in to your making of your pen wrap. Great work, my compliments to you.

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

Well done, Craig :clap1:

Your pen wrap is extremely well-made and looks really professional

Ohhhh, what a nice job you did, Craig! Thank you for sharing your photos with us; your pen wrap turned out very well indeed. (If only I could sew! :( )

I hope you are able to make one out of leather, too, and that you will do a "show and tell" for that one as well.

I'd like to get hold of a pen wrap for my pens and wondered if anyone might be able to help. I'm in the UK so if it is sold by a retailer here that would really help. I don't necessarily need it to be made of leather, any well-crafted wrap will be considered. Obviously price is also a factor but perhaps not predominant - say no more than £40 or $60US? I'd like to carry up to five pens but would consider a wrap with more capacity.

I could make you on for $40-$45 US that carries 12.

Thanks, though if I wanted a.larger one now, I think I'd be inclined to make it myself given how well my first effort turned out (see above).

Thanks Holly,

I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. I'd not sewn a thing before this but there are some fantastic tutorials on YouTube (I found

Particularly useful) so I think you should have a go. I'd be happy to share my method if you'd like.

You can bet I'll add some pics on here of my efforts in leather, might even post them as I progress this time.

Hi Craig

I thought I had replied earlier but i have had some strange computer issues today :headsmack:

Do you know how much leather you will need I usualy make one of these (that sounds like I make a lot well two to be exact :roflmho: )

The inner is made from pig skin lining leather

Then I glue the liner into the outer I think it was 10 x 8 inches it holds about 9 pens.

I dont have a picture of either of the finished wraps if we ask Fuchsia princess nicley she might show us some pictures with pens in it.

Leather wise I have pleanty of green quite a lot of blue not so much brown, lining leather I only have black and I dont have a lot.

You will also need a couple of leather needles and some thread I think £10 plus postage would be pretty close to what I have paid.

Let me know what you think

Michael

Thanks Michael, is your quote including the leather needles and thread? I think I'd want the blue for the outer with some lining leather, perhaps about 12x9ins of the former and 12x8ins of the latter.

Hi Craig

Yes that price included the outer leather the lining leather two needles and some thread.

I am trying to encourage you to have a go rather than make any money out of the deal.

I dont have one to measure perhaps I should make another ?

You will want to keep the stitching to a minimum you fingers will be really sore.

Get a large piece of paper lie the pen on the paper fold the bottom of the paper up until it reaches the top of the pen and then turn the top edge down.

Fold the top piece of the paper and fold it down over the pen.

this will tell you how much lining leather you will need I would think 2 1/2 times the length of the pen.

This way you only need to sew up the sides and then your slots.

You will also need a roll of masking tape a ruler and a marker pen.

PVA glue would also be good to stick the two leathers together I would not suggest you stitch the two leathers together.

Thanks again Michael, though I've never worked with leather before, I do have a plan as to how I would construct a wrap and am currently developing a template. I'm going to see what options are out there in terms of supply and will let you know as quickly as I can whether I wish to source this material from you. Thanks for the tips, I'm sure they'll come in really handy.

I am very impressed that this is a first sewing attempt - no wonder you are proud of it, every right to be. Look forward to the leather one, will be a bit harder work I should think, but well worth the trouble.

Okay, after a lot of hassle due to my lack of technical expertise, here are some pics of my home-made, hand-sewn wrap. I’m pleased with the result, please let me know what you think.

This is the front of the wrap before attachment of the pen cover (you can see the pins tacking it in place).

Here’s the inside of the wrap.

My Lamy Safari Vista does fit all the way down within the pocket with a little room to spare – about 5mm or so.

This close-up gives you a view of the decorative edging detail I’ve used, not too sophisticated but I think it works.

This is how the wrap looks when rolled and secured.

As this is the first piece of needlework I’ve ever done, I’m pretty proud of how it's turned out. I enjoyed making this so much that I shall be making another soon. I might also give leather a go…

Pretty basic wrap. Just the quick draw slot is not restricted by the cord. I just put a buttonhole slot there for the slit. Not exactly pretty but usable enough for me.

Another very nice pen wrap, Tony. (And a nice watercolor too - is that your work?) I think your wrap turned out very well indeed. What is the pen with the red clip that is on the outside of the wrap? Nice to have a pen available without opening up the wrap, and that pen is still protected as well. I like the design.

You guys are inspiring me - except that I really, really hate sewing - and I am quite awful at it, too! I do have some lovely pigskin leather that would be perfect for this, though..... :hmm1:

Thanks Holly. It's a Pelikano. I was reluctant at first, but now I'm planning on the third one :headsmack:

To paraphrase an old ad jingle for Lays Potato Chips - "I bet you can't just make one!" This must be the theme for pen wrap makers. You, Craig and Michael have all made at least one pen wrap and are planning to make more. (And I can't even guess how many you have made, Kathryn!)

I just "discovered" this site; it has some wonderful fabric designs: Spoonflower They also have about 28 pages worth of fabric choices based on the alphabet, so if you are looking for fabric with a writing theme...... Cool site, has anyone ever ordered from them? I think this will be my source for fabric if I decide to make a wrap. The fabric would also work for the lining of cigar boxes, etc., repurposed for pen storage, which is something I am working on now.

That's a really nice wrap Tony, loving the quick access pen slot which I might have to find a way of incorporating into my next design.

Happy to help in any way I can Holly, just shout. That website is precisely what I've been looking for, so many thanks for potentially causing me to spend even more money I don't have...

Glad I could help you and empty your bank account at the same time! :P I am impressed by a lot of the designs offered by Spoonflower and the prices seem reasonable - let us know if you order from them and how the experience was and if the cloth is as nice as it looks - I will enable you, and you can be the guinea pig, sounds fair, doesn't it? lol

By the way, Craig, where did you get the silver charm or metal bead (??) for your tie on the wrap? It really looks nice with the cord and the glass/ceramic/stone bead you used and adds a great finishing touch.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
