Could any of the other custom pen turners accomplish a group buy (Newton, Dr. Gortex, JEB, ...)? Nothing against Brian (I have 2 of his pens) but there's a LOT of under-recognized yet VERY talented pen turners in our midst.

I always figured, and could be completely wrong here, that they don't have the capability to "mass produce" pens like Brian does. They would still have to turn each individual pen on the lathe. I don't know if they would be willing to offer much of a discount.

I can't speak for other turners, but for myself, a group buy, while okay by me, couldn't be discounted by much or I wouldn't be making any money on the deal. Plus the wait may be unbearable to those who participated. :P

Now, having said that, I am currently working on a large order for a club, but the discount was pretty small. I guess it just depends on what everybody is willing to pay, how long they're all willing to wait, and if they're all okay with small differences between each pen, as they're all hand shaped and finished.

Ahhhh...just have a few more pots of coffee, Shawn.:ltcapd:

As far as I can tell, Shawn and the other less famous pen turners's prices are already quite low.

:roflmho:

I'm working on my first one right now. Glad I have the day off from school so I can try to catch up on some work. My valentine's date with my wonderful wife was yesterday, so I didn't get to play much. The Hobbit is MUCH better than LOTR, not as much walking, but it was still nearly 3 hours. Then dinner was expensive and blah - so I was disappointed in that. But the company was good. :)

I look at this way -- we started one tradition last year, and I'm carrying through the idea to see if it will sustain. That's why Edison. I also happen to know they're set up to do this thing.

I am happy (delighted) to hear Shawn is entering this sort of phase in his turning career. My guess would be the ideal time to catch him would be summer, and I would not at all oppose the idea of a group buy. Depending on finances, I very well may join. Similar things go for the Goulets versus other vendors who are also very generous. Last year this time, we did an Edison/Goulet type of thing. This year, I'm stirring the pot trying to see if it can happen again.

Depending on model, I would like to add another Edison to my collection.

What about Conid? Read some great things on the forum. Although I've never tried one, they sure look great.

How about a Pelikan M800 tortoise group buy if that would bring the price down a bit.

Sorry for getting in on this late. We are still recovering from the LA Pen Show.

We'll definitely do another group buy this year.

Timing will be sometime between now and the Chicago Show (May).

So for now, think late Winter/early Spring.

Pneumatic fillers and bulb fillers will not be out of the question. If we offered a more complex filling system such as these, we would probably also offer a cartridge/converter version as well....so there would be a more and less expensive option.

When it's time to start wrapping my brain around this, I'll start some threads/polls on preferred models, materials, etc.

Thanks!

Well, I'm thrilled beyond belief. It is my belief based on a very short email from Brian and his post above he has something really special in mind. I can't wait to see what he comes up with and will now very happily exit, awaiting what will come next. That will be Brian starting up some new thread and taking it from here, just like he did for the buy last year.

Excellent... I'm already mentally siphoning off part of my tax rebate.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
