Kaweco Ice Sport Eyedroppers For Highlighting

Recommended Posts

I know that the eyedropper conversion for Kawecos has been discussed here many times before, but I thought that you might like to see my Ice Sports which I have converted for use as a highlighter and for correcting notes. I am using Pelikan highlighter ink in the yellow with an extra broad nib and Diamine Red Dragon in the red with a fine nib.

I know that Pelikan say that their ink should only be used in the M205 Duo, but Cult Pens say on their website that it can be used in any pen. Looks pretty good, don't you think?

They look pretty sweet together! Is that regular printer paper? The inks seem to perform well on it.

Yes, just regular printer paper from an ordinary inkjet printer. There's a little bit of smudging when you go over the text, but not much.

It needs a few passes to highlight the text fully. I wonder if Oxonian could broaden the nib even more?

You might try one of the Kaweco italic options if you're looking for a broader nib, I think they're only around $10 or so. I use a large italic to highlight and its wonderful, you can turn it vertical if you want to highlight the whole text, and horizontal if you just need to underline.

I decided to copy you using Sheaffer No Nonsense pens! Broad italic for the yellow one to highlight, fine (is there an XF nib for the NNS?) in the red one for corrections. Both as eyedropper conversions.

BRILLIANT idea! Thanks for posting it!

K Cakes - many thanks for the suggestion. A bit of research showed that Kaweco sell a very broad 2.3mm calligraphy nib. One quick order from Cult Pens later (and they are quick!), I had one. They are literally a 30 second job to change over. Now I can highlight a row of text with just one pass of the nib.

Thanks for the nice comments. I wouldn't describe the eyedropper conversion as fiddly at all. Just a quick smear of silicone grease around the threads with your finger tip and then fill it up with a syringe with a blunt needle - it takes less than a minute.

My top tip for making it easy is to use a small shot glass or similar to hold the barrel steady whilst you fill it.

I have my silicone as recommended and a pink and yellow Kaweco ready to convert this afternoon. Just need to decide on ink colours now. Any suggestions welcomed.

I love my Diamine Red Dragon, but it's possibly a little bit dark for the strictly functional task of making notes and correcting text. Diamine are such good value in the UK that I would be tempted to go for their Poppy Red.

For the pink pen, one of the dealers at the South West Pen Show had a Diamine bottle for testing pens with a most amazing pink/purple colour. Comparing the sample in my notebook with the Diamine colour chart, it looks like it might be Claret.

I believe Nathan Tardif of Noodler's used to make very broad highlighter nibs for Kaweco Sports. They were as wide a could possibly fit in the cap. Does anyone have the link to the site with those pictures?

I will gladly take your unwanted Noodler's pens. Don't throw them away.

I have one of Nathan's monster highlighter nibs for the Kaweco. I'll attach a pic later this weekend when I'm not on my iPhone, unless someone beats me to it.

 I'm glad you tried it. It really is a great highlighting system.

I was already considering Claret as I have that one. I would like to put a blue in the yellow, I'm looking for a blue that will look good sloshing around in the barrell.

Maybe Diamine Marine? I just got a sample from isellpens and am about to order the full bottle. Its a gorgeous color, bright enough to stand out and I think it would look good paired with the yellow barrel.

That is a nice colour. I have Diamine steel lue which looks similar. A nice green blue should compliment the yellow pen.

Here are some pics of the Kaweco Sport highlighter nib that Nathan Tardiff created a number of years ago. The nib is 6.5mm wide; the O-rings you see in the third picture help seal the barrel for use as an ED filler. He took these pictures for me before he sent the pen; using Noodler's highlighter ink (of course!):

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
