My name is Ron Garland and I live in Raleigh, NC. I'm interested in anything that writes ... the 3 "P's" -(Pens - fountain & ballpoint, Pencils, & People) I'm not smart enough and not nearl;y informed enough to be a collector, I am just an gatherer! I hope I can learn from everyone else. I've learned in about 50+ years to keep my mouth shut, most of the time, but I just cannot control my fingers when they get around a keyboard. If I ramble, ya'll (that's one word meaning one or many people) shut me down. I'll go now and read what ya'll wrote!

Welcome to the group. I'm pretty new myself, but the flow is easy here. :)

I'm like you in that I don't collect but gather, however my reasons for doing so is that I'm a user. I collect to use the pens but not to collect.

What sort of FPs (fountain pens) have you gathered so far?

Ron, welcome!

Many of us here are users and not collectors. Hope you find the community warm and friendly!

Welcome to the group, Ron.

Anyone who can properly use and define the contraction "ya'll" is okay in my book.

Hi Ron and welcome to FPN :D

(wow, another FPN member from North Carolina!! :o )

You are very welcome here, whether you are a collector, a pen user, a repairperson, a pen dealer, someone who is interested in learning about pens but isn't a user/collector yet...or some combination of the above!

I hope you enjoy browsing through the forums...

Hi, Ron!

Nice to meet you.

I can relate to this comment -

I just cannot control my fingers when they get around a keyboard. If I ramble, ya'll (that's one word meaning one or many people) shut me down.

I think it's safe to ramble here; so far, nobody had told me to shaddup! Not that they would, anyway - everyone here is really nice, which is why FPN is a great place to visit! :)

Welcome, Ron!

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometimes... you just might find... you'll get what you need...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
