Pen Posse Pre-La And Nakaya Filming Pictures

Here are some pictures from today's Pen Posse Pre-LA Edition.

This was supposed to be our annual Pre-La Pen Posse where we get ready for the LA Pen Show which is next weekend. I had called this Pen Posee a few weeks ago and it all seemed normal. But.......life has a way of making things interesting. The Japanese TV show "Wafu-Souhonke" is filming an episode with a segment on Nakaya. Ether and I were contacted back channel about being interviewed for the show. After a bunch of discussions, Ether convinced the show to film our Pen Posse. So today the film crew came to our headquarters and filmed us and our Nakayas.

The film crew from Japan.

The film crew were awesome. They came and filmed the entire Posse including segments entering Peter's as well as the staff at Peter's. We talked about our Nakayas and even wrote and recorded a message to the craftsmen at Nakaya. They filmed everyone's story and I showed off my Nakaya pens. They're going to send us DVD of the show so we'll have a viewing party when it arrives.

I think the Nakaya filming scared off some members and at least one member had car troubles. Even I did not anticipate this failure mode. I think I scared the film crew with my laugh when said member's message ob FB appeared on my phone. Still it was a very wonderful Posse. We had a new member Zach show up. As with all new members, they are enthralled with the wonders of the Pen Posse Box of Goodness.

We had some old members show up for the first time in a long time. Yay! Ms. Loathesome.

Of course, Todd worked on a few pens. Ms. Loathesome had a leaking 51 and asked Todd to look at the pen. "He proceeded to unzip a pocket on the lower leg of his cargo pants and whip out a fiber optic mini flashlight to begin his intense study of the said implement." Thus Ms. Loathesome gave Todd a new moniker, the Penguyver.

Bonus! Great coverage (as always), Ricky.

I'm glad you took photos of the crew, Ricky. I completely forgot to. The interviewer is Hideyo and the camera man is Kazo (not sure of the spelling) who came from Japan last week and are leaving tomorrow (no time for sightseeing, I guess); Azusa works out of the LA office (not sure if that's strictly the TV show's office, but probably more of a production company that works with the the TV show's producers. I'm guessing.).

We learned -- rather *I* learned; Ricky already knew -- that the man who makes the barrels (the shape) and cuts the threads is 79 years old and doesn't have an apprentice. Draw your own conclusions! (Me, I want to buy a bunch more Nakayas! If I want a custom Nakaya, I'd better order it sooner rather than wait.) (I do want one. I just thought I had an unlimited amount of time to decide, heh.)

We Nakaya owners, users, appreciators wrote short notes to Nakaya using our Nakayas and said something to the camera directly to Nakaya (the crew will show the Nakaya craftsmen this footage), so that was fun. I like that we all use pens that individual men made with their hands and years of knowledge and experience.

As Mickey showed MsLoathsome how to write in a Spencerian hand, I realized again the wealth of knowledge Pen Posse shares -- from handwriting to repairs to nib tweaking and from sharing inks and papers and pens. And non-pen knowledge, too.

Maybe this little segment about Nakaya will spur a Pen Posse to form somewhere in Japan... hey? That would be cool.

Thanks for documenting Pen Posse, Ricky!

P.S. The photo entitled "Stuff?" That's my stuff! :-D My F-C Penvelope and pens and the Levenger Pen Parapet with four Nakayas and the pen bag with Pilot Parallels and Pentel brush pens and TWSBI Minis, :-D.

Thank you! This was so cool.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The producer contacted me and said the segment would be aired in Japan at the end of this month or beginning of March. Afterward, she will send me a DVD -- and a Pen Posse shall be convened for the U.S. premiere. :-)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
