My Pen Case Project

some of you might find this interesting (and doable!).

tired of lugging several small leather cases around to our regular pen club meets here in manila, i decided to repurpose a wooden carrying case meant for artists' tools--paints, brushes, and palette--into a pen case. the only other big thing i needed was a pen tray from gopens.com (not bad at $7 per tray, good for 48 pens cut horizontally); all the wood used here came from the dividers in the original box. also some glue and varnish.

here's the full sequence of pics of the case in the making (stupid me forgot to take a pic of the artists' case with the original layout inside, but you can imagine that):

wish i could say that i did this all myself, but i had some help from a handyman-friend, so this wasn't exactly DIY ;) i can resac vacumatics but am a klutz with a saw :(

at any rate, am very happy with the results--especially the little box in the middle that serendipitously proved a perfect fit for two pelikan TG-1 ink bottles.

now all i need is a little brass nameplate, and this baby will be good to go.

Oh, how wonderful! Beautiful little project. It turned out amazingly well. You'll be proud to bring that to pen meets, I'm sure. And you'll get lots of attention for your custom-made box. Well done!

thanks, folks! i'm looking at this as a prototype, thinking how the same space/s might be put to other or better uses, such as a compartment for basic tools... or maybe i should just think of another project, a pen repair toolbox ;)

Very lovely. Awesome job. Makes me wish I had tools to fashion something similar myself. Can't wait to see the name plate. Thanks for sharing with us.

thanks--that danged nameplate is taking longer than it took to put this whole thing together ;) meanwhile, i had another couple of cases made, still using the gopens trays (they're really nifty--you could cut them up yourself and put them in cigar boxes and such). these other trays will stay at home and house the bulk of my collection, while the wooden box with the handle will be for the road.

here are my best vacs in the other new case:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
