A Review Of The Pilot Metropolitan With Pictures

I noticed that jetpens.com have the Cocoons for sale at $40.00 here in the U.S. Metropolitans are $15.00.

Ouch...perhaps not worth the import cost? While I do think that the Metropolitan is probably worth quite a bit more than that for which it is sold, $40 is a bit...touchy.

I agree. Just not worth that extra $25.00 for the colors on the MR. I'm sure that the cost to produce is not more for the colored ones. Too bad that Pilot doesn't just sell for say $20.00 in all colors, nib sizes, and with a convertor. I'm sure that they would sell out on a continual basis as the Metropolitan is currently.

Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?" Patrick Henry

As nice as the medium nib in the Metropolitan is, I would enjoy being able to try the fine nib from the MR, especially if it is a reflection of the medium.

Thank you, arandur. I wasn't aware that Pilot had 2 separate versions of this pen. I suppose this means I should be able to use a Pelikan converter?

If the pen takes standard international cartridges, you absolutely should be able to use a Pelikan converter.

Thank you again, arandur. That's very kind of you.

The Cocoon sounds like a decent pen, if it were not for the price. From where did you procure it? Thanks for the comparison!

I got it from Engeika who sells on ebay and has a site. I placed a big order so I got free shipping so it was only $35 flat. What's weird is that the Prera's retail in Japan is $30 in Japan while it's $55 here which is kinda high and the Cocoon in Japan is around $30 in Japan but the Metropolitan is only $15 in the US. Usually Pilot places a premium on their fountain pens that are sold in the US. I got my Fermo for $170 but it's around $240 here in the US and I don't even think there imported because my Fermo came in a plastic case and the US Fermo comes with a leatherette like case with a warranty card and everything.

That is strange that Pilot would charge more for something out of the country, but the availability of other colors and nib sizes might have an impact, though I suppose that seems unlikely.

Anyone knows how the Metropolitan compares with the 78G?

The 78G is noticeably thinner and lighter (it's all plastic and the whole pen is the same color and material), with a twist cap instead of a snap cap, and the section flows smoothly into the barrel. The lighter weight and plastic material mean that you can post it more comfortably (I find the Metro too back heavy when posted). Also there's a choice of nibs (F, M, or a B italic). Overall, I prefer the 78G, but if you want one you should get it quickly because the supply is starting to dry up I think. There's been rumors it's been discontinued and we're running through the stock for a while, and I've noticed the eBay prices going up. They used to be $10 and free shipping, last I checked most of them were $14 (price + shipping)

Have you seen the new colors at Gouletpens? Let's see - there's the Bronze Lizard, Silver Python, Violet Leopard and White Tiger - Black Crocodile, too. I ordered the first 4 and am very pleased with them, both functionally and aesthetically. HP

Thanks!

But for the quality of the nib and the feeling of writting, is the 78G comparable to what has been said here about the Metropolitan?

The pilot MR (Medium)is my first fountain pen, I use pilot blue ink in it and it write very smoothly. Then, I bought a CON-50 for it so that I can see the ink level. I wish it writes a little bit wetter like my noodler's nib creaper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
