M600 B nib ground to a very crisp cursive italic by Dan Smith. I just got it today, and I am loving it. Here's a bit of a writing sample:

Apologies for the poor photos. I've misplaced the USB cable for my camera with macro capabilities and don't have a memory card reader on my PC.

This is a Mabie Todd Swan (from the '40s i believe) With a 14k (#3) oblique italic nib. The tines are a bit misaligned and i've not been able to correct them as they just spring back. I'll keep working on it though, slower is better I think.

writes nice, and a beautiful torpedo shaped pen. :-) Made around 1950.

I only saw these with #2 (4260) or #4 (4460) nibs - what number is on your barrel (close to the filling knob)?

 

Good success with the nib, doesn't look that bad. You're right: better 20 times to little force than once too much...

Nakaya Portable Cigar Shobu, and it is a factory stub!

Still wondering what ink would go with it.

Interesting. The nib width grade inscribed (below '14K') merely says Extra Broad, which I guess generally translates to Double Broad, BB, or C (for Coarse, in Platinum's lexicon).

Still wondering what ink would go with it.

Sailor Shikiori yonaga, perhaps? Or maybe Diamine Midnight. Edited by A Smug Dill

Yes it does, when I placed my order, I asked and explained to Nakaya what a stubbed nib was, and they were happy to oblige.

I will definately go with your ink choices.

I see. I can't wait to see your gorgeous pen can do with Sailor Shikiori yonaga! Usually I'm not mad on sheen, but the luscious green sheen is worlds away from the tired old red sheen from a blue ink that every ink manufacturer seems to do these days. That ink has pretty good water resistance, too (although obviously the sheen part would get washed off the page).

All three of my 360's have B nibs that have been ground to cursive italics by Michael Masuyama.

I used three Nemosine Singularity pens with each of their stub nibs: 0.6, 0.8, and 1.1mm.

 

Photos require me to use a camera, upload to computer then upload here. I usually use my phone to look at FPN.

Yesterday I received a Conway Stewart 388 I bought on EBay. It had stubbish tendencies to its writing so I thought Id try making it into an italic.       I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
