G'day FPN folks,

In today's Age newspaper, I've a review of Philip Hensher's The Missing Ink, a celebration of the handwritten word.

You can read it here.

Cheers,

Thank you.

I was wondering about this book. Often such books are very dry to read.

This book is on my list to purchase, thanks for the reassurance that will be a wise decision. It will sit on a shelf next to "Script and Scribble."

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

Yeah, I reckon it's wise. His enthusiasm for the written word really comes across.

That book is more expensive than a bottle of Iroshizuku ink. Yikes.

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice; damn

There goes that fox again.

That's the retail price for the book in Australia (and in AUD, The Age is an Australian newspaper).

The book is much cheaper from Amazon for those in the US, about the price of a bottle of Noodlers with shipping ;)

Yes, that's right. (I didn't see your reply earlier.) I'd say it's cheaper online and in bookshops. US book prices are generally lower than ours.

Got the book for Christmas and have only got through to chapter 4 so far. He is amusing and pleasantly down to earth while also thought provoking. A good read, even if it should only be taken in small doses if you're tired.

I also suspect someone needs to tell him that FPN exists.

Regards,

Richard.

:) makes me want to read it :)

speaking of which I just got two bottles of iroshizuku, everything is expensive in australia :(

Good to see there is still some quality work in The Age, not convinced the staff cutbacks have not had an effect on the quality of the paper. Oh well, I just got a subscription, lets see ... :P

My two best writers.

Many thanks for the review. It made me decide not to buy the book (my highest praise to a reviewer).

It's tough era for newspapers. They're cutting down on non-staff writers--e.g. yours truly--while asking the staff to write more, with fewer resources.

Perhaps he knows about it, and rightly stays away. (Because it's a cash and hour sucking demon from the planet Distraction.)

Ah, but don't you love it?

Those distractions provide the most joy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
