You Might Be An Ink Freak If...

The other day I caught myself staring long moments into the mirror trying to determine what shade of ink most closely matched my sweater. It's a sickness, I tell you.

(For the record, closest ink of those I possess would probably be Diamine Syrah, but my sweater was slightly more toward the blue side of the spectrum--maybe Noodler's Cactus Fruit Eel? Obviously I need more ink samples...)

Tell me I'm not alone in this sort of obsessive analysis!

No, that's some sort of illness, you know, like people who won't wear unmatched socks under their cowboy boots.

But I do try to get a cyan that matches the veins on the top of my right hand because they\ two are in such close proximity.

Oh, I don't actually color-coordinate. I'm slightly less not-right-in-the-head than that. But at times I do find myself analyzing stuff around me (the car in front of me in traffic, the points on my Siamese cats, the shoes a co-worker is wearing) trying to figure what ink most closely matches them.

OK, maybe that isn't so right-in-the-head after all.

I'd be happy just to know what color sepia is (I mean the actual ink from a cuttlefish). I think it is supposed to be dark brownish black, but some of the sepia FP inks I've gotten have a sort of greenish tint to them.

IF ... You change colors 5 times a day!

Nothing wrong with you that 5 more blues wouldn't cure !

I'm pretty sure the color of sepia is one of those ultimate questions, like "the meaning of life, the universe, and everything."

I'll say!

I try to restrict myself to matching ink colors to pens: Diamine Aqua Lagoon / Caran d'Ache Caribbean Sea with the aquamarine Safari, J. Herbin Ambre de Birmanie with the yellow Safari, Diamine Kelly Green to the 2012 Green Safari etc.

Same with the Waterman Kulturs (I'm a big fan of cheap pens). The Pilot Penmanships, being transparent, pose a bit of a problem but nothing that a few new ink samples won't solve. ;-)

Since I'm drizzlin' inks (almost) every day, whenever I ponder that question, I'm more apt to ask myself, how could I re-create that color ? But since it was too cold to play today, I spent the rest of my afternoon, wondering what "Points" are on Siamese cats ? Good points ? Undesirable points ? Claws ? Ears, sorta ? Bonus points (Nah)...?

Sepia is that color that YOU call sepia ! And, nobody can argue with that.

Take care,

J.R.

I'll confess that I do try and match my pen with the shirt I'm wearing... Or rather match my shirt with the pen I'm carrying

Sometimes I match my shirt with the ink stains on my fingers. I pretty much always have ink on my fingers no matter how careful I am! Then again I switch colours daily, in several pens :headsmack:

They definitely do have good and bad points, and are also quite pointy about the claws...but I was referring to their color points: the darker colored parts of a Siamese's coloring (their face, ears, tail, paws). My two are seal point, which is a very dark brown rather like Diamine Chocolate or maybe Noodler's Walnut or...

Ack! You have me doing it again!

I know exactly what you mean... Sadly.

Last week while visiting friends (with new baby) ..I was pondering if the "leftover' in the diaper was too similar to Iroshizuko's Ina Ho

I am telling you.. is a disease... :ltcapd:

Note to self - take Ina Ho off list of inks to try. :)

I began to worry when, watching "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", I saw Daniel Craig writing notes outdoors in winter and thought "He should use Noodler's Polar Blue"

To err is human.

To ARRR is pirate!

I may be guilty too, I have 26 inks on my gouletpens wishlist and am considering just buying all of them, because the 10 I have already are getting old!

I just can't help imagine a scene where I'm on a date with someone, looking deeply into his eyes...

Him: "What are you thinking?"

Me: "Um...just trying to decide if your eyes are more Private Reserve Chocolat, or closer to Noodler's Walnut. Could you turn your head a little to the left?"

Him: "!?!"

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
