How To Clean Lamy Z24 Converter

Hey guys,

 

This converter of mine has black ink trapped behind the piston, and it is rather annoying. Any tips? Is the converter able to be disassembled?

This happens to me too sometimes. I fill the converter halfway, and give it a good shake. Somehow, this usually gets it out. If there's a way to disassemble the Z24 without breaking it, I haven't heard.

 

Eta: I meant fill halfway with water.

Hi,

 

To disassemble it, gently grip the black ring with your fingers and a rubber sheet and gently pull it off. Next, the piston mechanism is a snap-fit into the top of the converter. It should pull out. Once you have it all cleaned and dried, push the piston mechanism back in and replace the metal ring. You can also take off the ring and fill the converter underwater to get water behind the piston seal. Make sure it is completely dry before you put it back together.

This sounds like a typical converter, Dillon, but my Z24 doesn't have a metal ring.

I submerge the converter completely in water and operate the mechanism several times. That usually cleans it. If that fails, I fill the back end of the converter with water using the same method and put it in the ultrasonic cleaner for a spell.

The metal ring is black chrome plated. It may look like plastic at first glance, but it isn't.

I'm curious though.

My wife has a Lamy Safari with the red handled converter.

Always wondered if this converter screws apart, like my Sailor Standards.

Tried to back off the black ferrule, but it did not budge & I didn't want to force it. Does this mean that the black ring is then press-fit or glued on?

How about the Lamy black handled converter? Is it constructed the same way (minus the two little guide lugs)?

coleforster, good to hear!!

 

tinta, on both converters, the rings are a press fit. They don't unscrew. The piston assemblies are a snap in fit. The Z24 has a black metal ring and the Z26 has a hard nickel one. Just grip the ring with something like a silicone potholder or rubber sheet, and it should slide off as you can see in the previous picture I put up of my Z24 converter.

Both work. A twist might make it slide off more easily but is not at all necessary.

 

Kenmc, if you have a Schmidt K1 or the K2 which the Lamy converter is based on, then yes, you can take them apart like this. For other Schmidt models like the K5 and K6 and other converters based on them like the Cross converters and Montblanc converters, one takes those apart by unscrewing the metal ring, not pulling it off.

it is interesting that I see your post here..

I was searching for Z24 assembly on google and found this page ..

anyhoo, I received my Lamy Callig 1.9 Joy today, came with a converter, but, I needed another converter (have quite a few Lamys). So, to make the long story longer, the extra one does not have the O ring between the red piece and the cylinder. So, not sure whether I should try to fix it or have it sent back.. it is such a small item that possibly not worth shipping rma back ;) ..
