How To Purchase A #5 Pilot Nib?

Hey all,

I have a Pilot #5 Medium nib on my Heritage 92 that is simply too broad for my writing style. Where can I buy a #5 fine nib? I intend to sell my medium at cost on the forum but haven't found a replacement #5 Fine to fill the void!

They are not sold separately.

Your best bet is to buy a Pilot Custom 74 and swap nibs with your 92 then sell the 74.

Or find someone to trade nibs.

Alternatively, have your nib ground to an F.

Engeika has nib and section assemblies for sale. These are for Pilot 74s but the nib should fit your 92. Trouble is that the nib is more expensive than a complete Custom 74 from his shop.

For about half the tariff, you could get a reputable nibmeister to regrind it to an F.

Grrrr.... Why can't this be just like Pilot's Vanishing Point nibs? There's probably a logical reason but I don't see why a retailer would not sell spare nib units.

I really want to keep the Custom Heritage 92 - Buying a 74 to replace the nib would mean that I would then have a 74 that had a medium nib that I would want to replace :headsmack:

A retailer cannot sell what Pilot does not supply. Many of the Pilot pens using the #5 nib are friction fit. Even if you bought a 74 section or a full Custom 74, you will need to know how to knock the feed and nib out and reset them. That's why Engeika sells the entire section with nib and feed. Very few companies will supply bare nibs for pens that are friction fit. The general pen buying public do not really want to bother with knocking out a feed and nib to change the nib.

I guess that's why I'm part of this nuthouse :roflmho:

I'll probably try my luck selling the nib /feed on the forums and buy a new section from ebay -_-

Is it gold or rhodium? I've got a gold F that I could trade.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

Do you mean color or material? Mine is silver colored and 14k gold material...

Too bad. it won't work because mine is gold-colored.

@Dr.Grace - Think about it... two toned pens are cool!

@everyone else: So there is really no other way to get a replacement nib besides buying it second hand?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
