Black Micarta My Hearta

know these take more time, but my don't they look handsome.

if I could, and drat I can't, it would be Carhartt's brown, (actually a tan color), with the Carhartt stud mounted in the top.

That would be AWESOME.

Could you do that? Can you get a stud that would fit in the top?

I don't see why not. If the customer has something or I could easily find something - then I could just make a recess in the finial and epoxy it on, or thread it on, or whatever it would take. Should look pretty cool, too.

Dang, these must be a lot of work! Totally worth it though. Very cool.

For sure. I know when buying knives micarta is fairly expensive handle material, not because the material itself is expensive (it isn't) but because of the long and tedious labour in finishing it. I'm looking forward to the photos once Shawn has finished the micarta with Urushi - I expect the glossier finish of the Urushi will highlight the texture micarta.

Hi Shawn,

Nice work, congratulations !

The matte black Micarta material looks very classy, did you cast it yourself?

One aspect worries me a little though:

Making the push button not removable from the rear while using a screw-in section is rather risky in my opinion/ experience.

The risk of deforming/ torsion the ink sac with the pressure bar when screwing the section on are rather high doing so.

Here it is with a couple coats of urushi. It gives a LITTLE depth, but not a huge difference.

very sober and neat  I like

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
