The cap band seems to be thicker. Is this the newer model?

It was brand new when I bought in Oct 2012. The matte black has a larger cap band. The normal 1911s have resin at the end of the cap, but I guess because it was more difficult to do in matte, they just extended the clip band to the clip was the same size/shape.

Yeah. Many of the Sailors with alternate finishes have the larger cap band. I think it looks good. Great review and pictures. I really like the look of the pen with the two-tone nib that you asked for. How has the finish held up after a year of use?

It's probably gotten a bit shinier, but I can't really tell. I use it on a near daily basis, and it still looks as good as the day I bought it. I'm looking for microscratches or any kind of imperfection, and I just don't see it. It still looks mint.

I actually dropped it a few months back. The nib turned into a perfect condor, which is actually good because it made it easy to fix. I bent it back into shape, and it's as good as new, thankfully. The worst thing currently wrong with it is that I was lazy cleaning it and didn't get all the dried ink out of the threading. I don't have a fancy camera on me, but take a look for yourself.

Looks as sleek and sexy as the pictures from a year ago, and that's with consistent use, and some drops! :yikes: I've only been hesitating on the matte because of the question of durability coupled with the premium for the finish, but after this, I'm at ease going for the matte. I've considered the Pro Gear II matte for a bit, but cigar shapes have always appealed to me more. The dried ink looks like a lavender lei for the pen :P

Thank you very much for your thorough reply, autopsy. :D http://i.imgur.com/JjxGfuM.gif

No problem. I think the ink was Diamine Wild Strawberry, but I don't remember anymore. Cheers.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I'm contemplating over getting this pen. Problem is, I can't seem to find that exact model. Is it out of production, or was it a special order? All I can find is the gold trim & gold nib or rhodium trim & rhodium nib model, but not this rhodium & two-tone nib beauty.

1911 normally only come with singlte tone nib, the two tone nib would indicate a special order or a retailer special model since two tone nibs typically only come on the Pro Gear line. Since the original reviewer mentioned purchasing from John Mottishaw, you may wish to send an inquiry to him.

I don't see it being sold new either, but I bet if you ask nibs.com, they will swap the nib out for you.

2 tone nibs are normally found on special editions (notably maruzen or bungbox among the few who they collab with), and the KoP model...

Sorry to bump an old thread, but does anyone know anything about a matte black Sailor 1911 with gold trim instead of the rhodium trim?  I can't seem to find much mention of it.  I was looking through my pen stash, and I found one that I had gotten several years ago, but haven't seen much mention of it since.  The only place I can seem to find it is an expired listing at Pen Chalet:  https://www.penchalet.com/fine_pens/fountain_pens/sailor_1911_matte_fountain_pen.html

I'm just wondering if this was a special edition or anything like that?  Aside from the matte finish, it seems like a regular 1911 (meaning no special nibs or features that I can discern).  Here are pictures of mine:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
