Montblanc Midnight Blue

very nice - thanks for sharing!

unlike more adventurous pen folk, i use just three or four ink colors: pelikan brown, diamine oxblood, parker or montblanc black, and parker or pelikan blue-black.

blue-black is boring to most people but i like it a lot because it was my late father's favorite ink and so it has a special resonance for me, and i always make sure that at least one of my daily writers is loaded with blue-black.

i just realized that i was out of B-B, though, so today i went a pen shop looking for pelikan B-B; unfortunately, they were out of it (too bad--it's good and cheap), so i looked around for alternatives, and found montblanc midnight blue (in the iconic "shoe" bottle). not too badly priced at around $18 a 60-ml bottle, which should last me a couple of years ;)

it's an iron-gall ink so it's permanent and it dries pretty quickly. i like it that it's not a loud blue but a very deep one, indeed edging towards black, and it shades nicely. should be great for signatures and such.

my CS churchill (which i got yesterday) came with a free bottle of green ink (which, for some strange reason, i can't stand) so i quickly loaded it up with montblanc blue-black, and they make a great pair. (i suspect the churchill will really shine with oxblood, though.) see here:

Thanks amberleadavis - the Neveda sun sure did a number on the inks!... wow.

A few members do mention that they notice a lot of shading with MBmidnight blue. I didn't find this, but i think that my nibs are all very wet writers. They put down a lot of ink which make the writing darker and the shading effect more subtle. I am noticing that the same ink can look a bit different in each of my FP's, which is part of the reason that i post my humble reviews...

Happy new years!

I find that it shades the most with the cheap copy paper at work! And it still keeps a reasonably tight line. Good for all applications, as they used to say.

I think this is one of the greatest inks ever created for under $20.00.

Thanks for posting, tenurepro. This is one of my everyday workhorse inks, and I routinely use it instead of black.

Excellent stuff, they really got this formula right.

Strange, my bottle is more black than blue, and not this nice shade of very dark blue. Must be my nib. :headsmack:

No, it's not really blue, in my experience: more of a violet black, at least with my papers. I imagine a different paper would bring out more blue.

All the same, I think it's a very classy and distinguished looking ink.

I just bought this in cartridges...I was afraid to commit to a bottle and find out I didn't like it. First pen I used, the ink looked washed out and went down dry. Switched to my Jinhao 159 and I love how it flows now. I get moderate shading too.

Just so you know, Carl, the cartridges are not iron gall, but the bottled stuff is. I don't know why. The esteemed Sandy1 has reviewed both inks and I believe also A/B'd them.

Being a dryish ink, it does work better in a wetter pen. I use it at work in a very wet ALstar and it's amazing.

very nice ink indeed... haven't used it since the review (i've making an effort to use all of the ink colours that i have)... maybe i'll skip ink of joy and go straight to midnight blue.

Really? That's why I was interested in the ink in the first place. I did a water-proofness test and sure enough, it wasn't permanent. However, it was resistant enough to meet my standards for use.

Other than the missing gall, does the bottled Mont Blanc behave like the cartridge ink?

I have yet to try the cartridge version myself, so I can't say. But here are links to excellent reviews of each, by the excellent Sandy1:

From the review linked here, and your experience, it seems like the cartridge ink *may* be the same as the bottled ink! But MB won't tell, the rascals.

The old Montblanc Blue-Black is definitely more blue than the current Midnight Blue. I find Midnight Blue leaning heavier towards a violet shade, which I enjoy a lot.

Montblanc Midnight Blue is my go-to blue-black ink after Pelikan Blue-Black.

In addition to the color difference I find that the new Midnight Blue to be not as water resistant as the old Blue Black. Probably more dye and less iron-gall.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
