Ad_Astra, Thanks for you review of this ink. I have used Platinum Blue Black quite a bit and find it has great shading characteristics, flows well, and is a very pleasing color. The photos I took show more color than your scan indicates, though I'm not sure why. I think the color of this oft overlooked ink is very close to what is shown below. Here are a couple of photos I posted earlier this year on a different thread:

Ok, so I considered that this might have been a mistake on my part, so I checked out the review page again. The color shown is -definitely- what it looks like on the page, although that's from a TWSBI that's slightly on the dry side.

Your scan is 100% accurate when I compared it to a wetter Safari (one I modified).

Interesting to compare the two though, because the drier pens will definitely get that gray-blue look, and the darker blue doesn't emerge unless there's a good amount of ink being laid down. Not necessarily a gusher, but at least a bit wet.

My Platinum BB looks very similar to dcpitch's. Unfortunately, neither my handwriting nor any of my pens even remotely resemble those of dcpitch.

Almost all my pens are set up to lay down a wet line, usually 7 or 8 on a scale of 10. I just can't learn to like dry-writing nibs.

Nor your blithe jocularity, which always amuses me and exceeds mine by 1000%

I've just gotten this ink (at last) and I have used it only with an unmodified Noodler's Konrad, and it looks like dcpritch's scan, lots of blue, little gray. But I look forward to using it with a drier pen--I like the gray look--reminds me of Pelikan blue-black, except with better flow and lubrication.

Thanks for the review.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
