Sorry the batteries ran out on my xray-vision
Batteries? You mean, you don't have special xray eyeglasses??? :)

Yes, I really do like the idea of having a whole bunch of different pens with one ink... maybe my Monaco Red/Brown/Burnt Sienna will benefit from this! Ditto with the Swisher's Apricot Orange.

The factors that go into how a certain ink appears on paper are many:

type of nib-determines line.

rate of flow (feed)-determines amount of ink delivered to paper.

paper - finish of paper affects flow, performance of pen, and absorption.

temperature- affects evaporation rate.

humidity-affects rate of evaporation.

writing pressure and speed -affects quantity of ink delivered.

So even if we all use a q-tip to swab ink we will all need to be using the same paper and work in similar environments.

Nah, built into my genetical make-up . But the bio-eco-batteries do have to be charged every now and then. Generally, a nice cuppa will do the trick :D.

Oooooh... I think you will have to partake in the KCat Vial Ink Exchange Programme . I wouldn't mind trying it out.

Better make a list of all of my inks :D.

Great review, Wim! (I just read it today)

It's hard to believe that different pens produced such variety in shading with the same ink :o

I guess it's just another factor to take into account when choosing an ink---the fact that different nibs may produce different shades. Interesting stuff! Thanks for such a detailed review :)

Do you have enough time? That could take weeks!

Thanks for the kind words!

I must say it is a lot of fun doing a review like this, and very therapeutic too. Great escape from the hectic work life :D.

Nah, it isn't that bad, at least I don't think so :D.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
