I have an older S.T. Dupont pen that writes like a dream so I'm a fan of the brand. I'm looking to buy more pens in the future. It was mentioned to me that the quality has gone down recently (possibly due to a fire). This was some time before I had purchased the pen, so I honestly don't know who mentioned it or if it's true (a little bit of google-fu failed to come up with anything about a fire). Has anyone noticed a change in quality in the past few years? The pen I have is a bit older, so I'd be curious if I should consider purchasing only older pens.

I won't lie, I'd probably still consider buying a pen that isn't as great as the older versions cause it would probably still be better than most of the pens out there. :-)

The newest ST Dupont I have is one of the Neo-Classiques and I find no difference in quality with that one.

This thread is quite compelling. I don't find the Fidelio on their website. Is it discontinued? Is only part of the collection on their website?

Yes, the Fidelio morphed into the Orpheo/Olympio line as the small model and the clip changed. The Caprice and D-Link were also about the same size as the Fidelio.

The fire was real. Here's a link to a Bloomberg news article that mentions it. The fire was Jan. 5, 2008. Bloomberg News article

I just purchased a Dupont pen about a month ago and agree it's a great pen. The nib is incredibly smooth and it feels like writing on silk. The weight is much heavier than a resin pen so you should really try to feel for it. I enjoy writing with it :-).

+1 this sums up what I was going to say. I recently bought a used Olympio XL on this forum. Very, very pleased with it. Smooth as butter.

I only have Olympios, several newer ones - probably post-2008 - and one older one with black section and Urushi leaf on the cap (the newer lacquer pens don't have that too, and they're definitely authentic) and they're all writing equally well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
