INTRODUCTION:

Montblanc 234½ -- the earlier 23x is the only other model besides the earlier Meisterstück series that uses the telescopic piston mechanism. Not much else to say besides the telescopic piston mechanism and the nib.

Appearance & Design

The 23x series takes on a flat top/bottom design similar to the 12x/13x Meisterstück series, however with few differences:

  • the 23x utilize a filler cap with a filler knob inside instead of being built-on filler knob.
  • the taper on the cap crown.
  • two cap bands instead of one thick cap band (with Meisterstück engraving).
  • plain ink view window instead of lined ones.

Construction & Quality

The construction of the 23x series is well-built like the earlier Montblanc writing instruments (not saying the modern MB are not well-built). The telescopic piston is the main buying point of this model, at least for me, that is. This particular celluloid material however, shrinks, so maintaining it in a unchanged state is somewhat impossible.

Weight & Dimensions

The size of the pen is like that of Pelikan 400 -- pretty much a standard sized pen back in the days? The telescopic mechanism doesn't add much weight to the pen, so it's light like a 400 also.

Nib & Performance

The nib on this 234½ is an OB nib, writes wet like a typical MB nib. It's semi-flex like the typical vintage nibs and writes very nice without any problems. This particular nib however, needs to be re-tipped because the iridium is getting on the thin side...

Filling System & Maintenance

Ink intake with the telescopic mech. is on the high side, comparable to the modern 149s. I didn't take apart the pen, but I assume it can be taken apart for maintenance/replace the cork without much problems?

Conclusion

A non-black Montblanc; telescopic piston mechanism; vintage nib; celluloid/hardrubber construction...what else more to say?

A wonderful pen to have!

Lovely, the jade colour is still in good condition.

I have a 234½ in black. I guess my 234½ is slightly later as it has a Palladium OBB nib.

Why does your pen have a long tapered tail?

p.s. I love the telescopic piston mechanism in these pens. It's a shame that no one makes a pen with one of these today. I guess that cost is to blame. The piston mechanism can be dismantled and the cork seal replaced. Eckiethump (Eric Wilson) did a great job on my pen.

Malcy, take a look at your 234½, the tail is also tapered. At least that's how it looks in the pictures from your review.
Btw, love that Palladium OBB of yours, very tempting! That especially so with the price you got it for!

I think that the perspective in the image with the two MBs made it look like the jade pen was more tapered but looking closer I can see that this is not the case.

Great looking pen, rare, AND you have the Platinum version. :puddle: The MB 234 1/2 really is an excellent model in all its versions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this special version Soot.
