Waterman's Artist Pen 882

I was lucky, I think, to be able to buy this Artist's safety pen from ebay last week. The pen finally arrived today in India, and gladly the pen is as described. The nib is the artist's nib all right as I cross checked from Antoniosz's threads on this topic. Super needle point and flexible. The pen is uninked, no ink traces, even the shaft seal seems tight, have not filled the pen yet. However my query is about the sticker on the barrel, it either says: 882 or B82, Artist, $8.75

However the pamphlet accompanying the pen lists the artist's pen as model no 751. Can anyone pls tell me about the 751 Vs 882/B82 numbering? David Nishimura's excelllent waterman's numbering page does not talk about these later safeties as far I looked and searched. Help will be much appreciated.

Second question: I would not like to ink this pen since it is all about the nib in this case, can the nib carrier in this pen be used in a 12 1/2 safety(I have a few user pens)? they look somewhat similar.

It seems to me that I read B82 on the sticker of your pen. I would assume the nib is a size #2 then. I would assume it could then fit in another pen with #2 nib, as the feed should be compatible. I think a Waterman 42 or 42 1/2 would work. I am not familiar with a 12 1/2 safety. I know 12 eyedroppers. Are you sure about the 12 1/2 numbering of your safety? I never saw one of this artist's pens in real life, but I read about them once, probably here on FPN.

It is the 12 1/2 VS; vest safety. I am not planning to seperate the nib from the carrier, just wanted to check if the carriers will directly swap between the pens.

Thanks for all and any inputs.

RHR2010 in the pre 1917 code 12 1/2 VS equaled 42 1/2V in the post 1917 code so Hari's other pen is very old.

Hari I bet they don't swap. They're more than a couple of decades apart in age and are they the same size? I would say that taking this nib out of this pen (with or without the carrier) would hurt it's collector's value. Is there a reason you don't want to use this pen? It looks great.

I have not checked yet, maybe i will not swap the carriers after all. This pen is pristine and well preserved, so I did not want to disturb it when I have other user grade safeties. I will look for another user safety from the same later era so that I can experience the artist's nib for a while.

I am really curious about the 882/751. anyone has access to waterman's catalogs etc?

Thanks!

Hari

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
