Anybody Sketch With Their Nakaya?

TT is fine. Or Trin.

I use measured pencil guidelines all the time. I'm not such a purist about drawing by sight with my more detailed drawings. For my quicker sketches, I do rely on hand-eye coordination. It's like exercising both sides of my brain. Below you can see how I used guidelines to set up a drawing. The first picture shows the measured pencil markings. The second is the completed sketch.

All of these drawings are great.

KEEP DRAWING

I just read about a drawing teacher telling a student: " you have to do a million bad drawings before you get to the good ones." --so keep drawing--the more you draw the better you get. Draw without worrying about the end result--make mistakes--make BAD drawings--it is how you learn to make GOOD drawings. I was actually taught to never start a drawing trying to make a "good" drawing--just draw to draw or to work out a thought or idea.--it has made all the difference.

George said something about measuring. What? People MEASURE their drawings?

:-D

At the Flax Pen Faire today, I was trying to pick out pocket-size notebooks for drawring, and Ricky asked if I was ready to try blank pages (no lines), cos I was looking at a cool notebook with no lines, and I said, "The lines don't really help me anyway, even when I try to draw along them."

You're right, Steve, just draw to draw. That way is so much more fun. And no pressure! I'm not even concerned that I have another 999,879 or so drawrings to draw, ha ha ha. I'm just going to use my amazing powers of denial to say, "THESE ARE ALLLLLL GOOD!" (But only to myself. Everyone else can think what they want.)

you are very talented. I wish I could draw like that.

Here is the more recent set of 30, Schiele Variations.

I've used Piccolos and the Desk Pen and a Sailor Desk Pen (the $12 plastic with steel EF nib) and a Parker Duofold Vac and the Edison Pearl (steel F nib).

The next set of 30 I'll use the Desk Pen (F) and one of the Piccolos (M) and a Montblanc 100-Year Historical (widest line at an EF -- I know, unexpected that it's the widest line) and maybe the Pelikan 140 (semi-flex EF -- actually, this is the widest line) -- but the Pelly has red ink in it, so I might not change it for the drawing practice.

The drawrings are small, about 3-4" squarish (8-10cm).

Lisa--You rock!

No, YOU rock! :-D

Thank you, Steve.

Thank you, Hanoi. I'll set aside the question of talent and focus more on the qualities of determination and fun. By the way, how do you know you can't draw like that? Have you tried? I had no idea until I decided, Phffffft! I'm going to draw! And then I did. And I really, really enjoy it. So my suggestion to you is to pick your favorite pen and draw something. :-)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
