Hi, last Saturday was the Cologne Pen show. The venue was at a hall along the River Rhein banks.

The first thing I saw was Axel's(penparadise in FPN) Montblanc bag pile. Each bag is number xxxx/4810.

Just opposite to Axel was Lutz of Penboard's table

Sorry I can't remember whose pens these are, but there are some very nice overlays.

The two elderly gentlemen had so extremely nice pens to sell, e.g. a clear demo 139 made by Torelli.

Another shot of the room - lots of people there! Can you spot someone from FPN there?

I met up with Michael R (of FPN) and we had lunch together. I love the Koelsch beer now - way better than what I get in Muenchen. We chatted for over 2 hours - that's how long it took the food to arrive! What a lovely time!

So that was Saturday. On Sunday I was at a flight from Cologne to Munich. Sitting next to me was an Italian couple. The wife went to the toilet after taken off and the man took out a 10 pen box and opened it to check if his pens were in order or not. I saw there were like 4-5 MB coral red and a few marbled 24x. So I asked the guy if he was at the Cologne pen show or not, yes, he was. Then he said his name is Roberto. I asked "Possaro?" Yes. bingo.

So we spent the next 40 minutes chatting on pens and he showed me most of his pens in his pen cases. This is really the first time I have ever had such a chance encounter. Very happy indeed...

I didn't buy much at the show, only got a nice black MB#30 and a coral #20.

That was fun Kai, thank you.

Do you speak German, or could you do transactions in English?

Tell us more about the pens - what kind of nibs, how do they write, filling mechanisms?

Thank you for sharing and really nice find! I think I'll be like a child in a candy store if I'm there :cloud9:

Thank you for the report.

Thanks!

Yes I was feeling a kid in a candy store

There were just too many goodies. Most of the traders can speak quite good English so I have no problems doing transactions. The only issue I have is that they only take cash, no credit cards and also no haggling.

I bought the #30 from Osman. As most who attends European pen shows would know he is the "goto" trader on MB vintage pens. The #30 has a medium semi-flexible nib that has still visible imprints on both barrel and cap. He had quite a few safetys that were just so beautiful and in pristine conditions. As I had to consider my meagre budget I had to decline them.

As for the #20 I got it from Gary Lehrer. I bought it from his website last month and picked it up at Cologne. It's got an extra fine to fine nib also semi-flexible.

Apart from MB I also bought a nice little rolled gold Yard-o-Lad pencil for my wife, a Soennecken 305 in Lapzui blue, a Faber Castell #884 green striped, and a Osmia Duofold junior in lapzui blue.

Best regards, Kai

Thanks for the report and the great pics - I'd like to go one of these days. Mix my love for pens with my love for travel.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
