Awesome, I've been hoping for better availability ever since allwritenow.com stopped selling the Varunas. Unf. most of the Deccans don't have the cc option.

To folks looking for these pens, FPNer Ashish Wakhlu has been doing a good job of making these pens available outside of India, some of his current listings in the classifieds can be found here:

  • 1 month later...

I spent the last three days on a business trip to Hyderabad. On advice from fellow FPNer Hari and a friend from Argentina (of all places!) I visited the Deccan Pen Store. Ironically one of their branches is two doors down from our company office, so I can't believe I had never noticed it in previous Hyderabad visits. There I met Haleem, one of the 7 brothers (I think?) who own and run Deccan Pens. Haleem pointed me to the hand-painted advertisement on the wall that was created for the shop in 1928. I spent the next hour (all I could take out from my meetings though I wanted to take more) learning from a man who was clearly an absolute fountain pen expert. I bought several models from him before I had to get back to work. However, the next day I was able to carve out more time and visit the main branch in the southern part of Hyderabad. There I met Waseem and Mustafa Amer and an even better selection of Deccan pens. An hour and a half later with a bag full of pens and a much lighter wallet I left with a huge smile knowing I had just experienced one of the great fountain pen delights that India has to offer. Below are some photos from my experience.

Each of these pens is handmade. Most are ebonite (hardened rubber) though the white pen and Author (last two on the right) are acrylic. The nibs are mostly medium and fine and almost all of the pens are eye dropper filled with the exception of the Masterpiece white and Author, which are aerometric. I'll try to give a more thorough review of some of the pens soon.

The pens I picked up in Hyderabad (from left to right): Onyx small, Regal, Onyx regular, Five Star, Onyx rounded, Bullet Jr, Bullet Sr, Advocate, Advocate Rounded, Ambassador, Masterpiece, Masterpiece White, Author

Hi there,

I joined FPN in February this year and am quite intrigued by the detailed and extensive feedbacks and analysis that one gets to see about any pen. It does feel great that there are still so many fans of Fountain Pens all over the world!! Few days back I was going through your review of Deccan Pens with all images and everything, but today none of the images are there!! If possible do reload them as you had the maximum range of Deccan models.

Sorry about that! I ran out of photo space on FPN and got overzealous in deleting some photos from old posts. Here are those photos again.

What a lovely post. Makes me want to go back to Hyderabad. I've been a regular at the Begumpet outlet for the few years that I spent in the city. Mr Haleem is a delight to talk to. Congratulations on your purchase, hope you have fun!

Ah. That happened to me last week. The answer: don't use the 'attach files' button. Instead use the 'upload' function at the top of the page, or have your pictures somewhere extern, like flickr or picasa. Then use the 'insert image' button.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
