What Pencil Are You Using Today?

I'm on my second P205. The first ceased functioning after 20 plus years of use.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Yes they can. There's up to 4B or 5B in 0.5mm lead. Remember these leads don't share their formulation with wooden pencils. They use polymers to gain strenght. I've got 2B lead in 0.2mm!

After some research I settled on Ain-Stein(1) 0.5mm 4B leads and they hold up pretty nicely.

(1) Which again -- to your point -- is Pentel. On a side note : those guys really "get it". The leads are awesome and their EnerGel refills are excellent writers.

Pictures please! For sure they have a pretty good predecesor in the Hi-Uni...

Well there isn't much to show off in the actual result ... it's just pencil writing. It's the softness and how the pencil writes with the lightest touch. I'll leave this here though : look at the size of that lead : probably around 3.0mm diameter. Insane. For comparison, the one on the right is a Tombow.

Ain Stein are great leads. I have many grades in different diameters and so far, have found no cause to complain. Have some friends who claim Pilot Neox leads are better, but I will need to have same diameter and same grade to compare, and so far, I don't have that combination.

Tombow Mono Graph leads were kind of a lead down. Not as soft or smooth as Ain Stein, Kuru Toga or even Super Hi-Polymer offerings.

Well, I am using this bling pen. I only paid 3 euro to get a practical pen as a stylus on ipad and as pen on paper.

I found one coupon on Offers and I searched the keyword as Ballpoint Stylus Pens. Finally I got a 60% discount off.

I was attracted by its appearance as it is bling and practical functionality as a pen and a stylus. More importantly, on the basis of coupon, it only took me 3 euro to get a good stylus. Isn't it beneficial?

Here is the stylus I got

Love the Hi-Uni but for some reason I tend to prefer Tombow's cores. Right now am using a Tombow Mono R HB, a Pentel Black Polymer 999 HB and an Itoya Helvetica - all 3 are incredible pencils!

Grippy lead like the Tombow Mono makes me angry. No kidding. Even worse is Koh-i-nor.

The Hi-Uni is about perfect. I waffle between the Hi-Uni and the Steadtler Lumograph as my favorite. Today I used the Steadtler.

An old Linex 2mm clutch pencil with a 2B Hi-Uni lead sharpened to a long point. The only thing I don't like is the knurled grip so it's covered with heat-shrink insulation. Perfect.

heh. I've got Tombow Mono 100's in B and Mitsu-bishi Hi-Uni's in B arriving in about 14 hours. (I have plenty of Hi-Uni's in HB but wanted to try the "B.") The Lumographs will be my next dernier cri. :P

Tombow 8900 HB. Very smooth graphite and it holds a point very well.

My box of 12 was made in Vietnam. I was surprised - I thought they were still manufactured in Japan.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
