2012 La Pen Show Haul

Recommended Posts

Just got back from LA and started the process to upload the show photos. In the mean time enjoy the annual LA Pen Show Haul. To make it interesting, I will not identify the pens just yet. Time to guess. :hmm1: :bunny01:

This year is quite a bit harder than last year. Enjoy this while I write up the LA Pen Show report. (disclaimer-Marc Shiman cannot comment nor can members of the SF and So Cal Pen Posses since Marc knows all the pens and I showed the others the pens last night.)

Interesting assortment. Looks like at least one lever-fill.

As to my own experience at this year's show, well, financially, I think I came out ahead: I only spent $6 on admission, and $6 on some bright blue mailable sealing wax, and whatever I fed the parking meter, but I won two drawings: the Monteverde match-number drawing, and the Visconti that they gave away two of, around 3:00 or so.

The Visconti is fairly self-explanatory: a very small, but probably fairly expensive, retractable ballpoint.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of the Monteverde: it's rather fat, with a retractable ballpoint on one end, and some sort of capped ballpoint that appears to run on International FP cartridges on the other end.

If anybody can tell me what I won, and what they're worth, I'd appreciate it. (As ballpoints, they're of little use to me, but knowing what they are, and what they're worth would be useful if I were to trade them for something else, and if I end up giving them away, I'd at least like to know what it is I'm giving away.)

Third pen from the left: Oldwin Mora Stylos?

Yes, an Oldwin in the Omas saffron blue celluloid. That one is somewhat easy due to the shape and size. I got it from Sarj Minhas but Andre Mora was actually at the show. This set of pens is pretty hard. I will be impressive if someone can name even half of the rest.

You should recognize the black pen on the left.

Ooo, that's a pretty Vac you have there.

That' not a vac.

A Williamson I presume.

I... yes. That's not a Vac. You sneak, tilting the clips away from the camera!

I do see 2 Columbus' and a Tibaldi, though. Intriguing haul!

Not bad.

There is a Tibaldi and two of the pens are Columbus.

For ref, the Tibaldi is the grey on the far right, and the Columbus' are 6th and 7th from the left, if I'm still able to count numbers.

Is the fourth from the left missing a piston knob, or is the end of the barrel threaded for posting?

The Tibaldi is on the far right. That one is easy because of the engraving and the shape of the clip. Now what model and series? :roflmho:

The 6th and 7th pens are Columbus but is that all? :hmm1: (hint: there are more than two Columbus')

The fourth pen will be the hardest to identify.

There's another pen to the left of the two Columbus' (Columbi? Columbos?) that might also be a Columbus?

As to model and series on that Tibaldi, no clue - I'm not an Italian pen obsessive like you. :P :roflmho:

The fifth pen from the left is also a Columbus. Is that all?

From the left, the second is a LeBouef, the fourth is either a Pan or a Four-way or not.

The second pen is a LeBouef with a #8 nib. That one is also one of the easier ones to pick out because of the material.

Good try on the fourth pen. Not correct but you are one the right track and that's no mean feat.

I'll post a list once I'm done with the show report. I'm writing it right now.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
