Ouch... My Ahab Just Bit Me...

Recommended Posts

Well, I've got a nice cut on the side of my finger now. embarrassed_smile.gif

I think I angered my Ahab. I put "that ink which we do not speak of" into it, and it really hated the ink, and me for doing that.

I was getting sick of it's lousy performance and temper-tantrums, so I decided to flush and re-ink.

Whilst flushing it, the side of the nib, those nice and sharp shoulders, cut my thumb. I had one heck of a time flushing it. Almost permanently stained my sink too...

I put it back together. Re-inked with Noodlers black. Like a new pen now. :)

But my wound still remains. I shall vow to never feed my Ahab a nasty ink again. Sorry Ahab...

Anyone else ever gotten bit by their pens? I've had plenty of clients pen try and spear my hand before, many with great success... mellow.gif

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

I once got stabbed in the hand with a Lamy Safari. I had a tattoo of sorts on my palm. It hurt like heck, but fortunately the American blue ink was not toxic.

Yea, that is my first and last tattoo, I was stabbed in the finger by a crowquill loaded with India ink. Still there!

Hm, there's an opening for the enterprising tattoo artist; BSB tattoos.

Well then... I guess I won't be letting any writing instruments into my padded room! You're talking to the guy who cut off a part of his finger pad taking out the rubbish (something sharp inside...)

My husband had a little Noodler's Black tattoo for a good long time after a fight with a pen. I laughed at him until I ended up with BSB all over my hands after an angry exchange with my Preppy Eyedropper and ended up being called "Smurf" for several days until I finally got it off. These inks don't play!

Just like me when someone give me coke zero instead of regular coke! and that goes for diet coke and any other coke flavors as well!

I am a one ink pen, I only work with regular coke in me! :roflmho:

Heh, BSB is far away from nasty -- try Chesterfield Archival Vault :P Great ink but the sample I have precipitates like crazy, wouldn't dare to put it into something else I can't as easily clean as an Ahab... BSB cleans up nicely w/ a bit of bleach. How in the world did you get cut when flushing ? Trying to remove the nib and the pen hold on to it ?

You ever had it, where you're holding something, and suddenly, your fingers and the object just explode? Not literally of coruse, but they explode with movement.

That happened. I twitched I guess. :) While holding the nib.

Gave me a no-joking 1.5" gash on my thumb. Luckily the deep part was only about 1/4" long.

I feel stuuupid... wallbash.gif

Honestly? No.

Maybe you should get that checked out. You might be turning into a werewolf or a zombie.

Haha - now that I have *that ink which we don't speak of* in my bloodstream, I'm sure to turn into something nasty. :)

An ink-zombie!

More than ten years ago, I got stabbed on my right hand by my classmate with a fountain pen. After reading your post, I checked my hand and the tattoo dot is still there. :roflmho:

Well ...

I did once ... without taking too much care - press hard on the nib end of a Pilot VP which was exposed rather than the click end. That hurt!

But it didn't bite me as hard as your ahab did!

Not with a pen...

When I was a teenager my parents wanted me to trim the carpet in my sister's room as I was getting ready to go out. I was rushing with my pocket knife when there was sudden movement. I'd cut the carpet. Pity the tip of my thumb was in the way. Lots of blood.

Fortunately the next door neighbor was the family doctor. He though that stitches wouldn't work and to just use Neosporin and bandaids. I don't even have a scar.

The "Tattoo" I've got from a pencil is another matter.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
