New Lamy Safari Won't Write!

I received a Lamy Safary with a 1.5 nib for Christmas, along with a converter and black Lamy ink. However, the pen just doesn't seem to want to write. It's not necessarily scratchy - it grabs paper occasionally (mostly because I have to press hard to get any ink to flow), but generally leaves an impression on the paper and some ink fills in. When it does flow (or I press hard), the ink is very light. I've used the Lamy ink with dip pens and an old Osmiroid 65, so the ink itself is okay. Do I need to clean the feed or is it likely a bum pen? Or nib!?

Thanks!

Purge the feed and make sure that the nib is properly positioned on the feed. They are removable so it's possible that it isn't secured properly.

If the problem persists then there is probably a more obscure issue.

Sometimes with Lamy's broader italic nibs I have to prime the feed if the pen hasn't been used in a while. Unscrew the body and turn the converter knob a bit until the ink moves down into the feed.

I had a similar problem with a F nib, i inserted the cartridge that comes with it and unlike the EF one i had which started immediately it refused to write, so i flushed it with water, it seems the ink they use for testing was too dry/gummed up to allow the new ink to flow down to the nib.

After flushing it with water and one of those baby nose suckers to help push out water it's been working fine, a bit on the scratchy side, might be somewhat misaligned but haven't gotten a loupe to check that out yet, but ink flows fine now.

I just bought a new Lamy Safari with the 1.5 nib and had the same issue. I used the most dilute soapy solution, a tiny amount of foaming dishsoap, then 10% ammonia to 90 % water to flush it out. New pens, factory residues. My pen works great, but I have found that wide nibs sometimes won't start right off, and they have to be coaxed, another issue.

IT IS NOT A SAFARI PEN, BUT A SAFARI WITH A NIB OF A JOY. I am using one with a 1.0 ni Witch is OK, but all nibs are different, the best for5 the safari is a good B.

Someting impotant is to tate it in the staple as every fountainpen.

The Lamy service is very good, but doesn't do miracles.

The Joy is the same as a Safari pen, only with a longer barrel. They all use LAMY nibs, which are all the same

(except the LAMY 2000 nibs), gold, steel, black, white... There is no LAMY 1.0 nib... you probably mean the 1.1

 I am just starting to get into fountain pens again and I realize there may be some typos involved, but I have no idea what this means.

You just have to tate the pens from time to time. Specially when you change inks in the pen.

Very amusing. My wife just received a bumper sticker saying "Witches: Not Just For Burning" so maybe I should give her the Safari and JOY will result.

I had the same problem with my new Safari with m nib. I didn't work good with the Lamy ink cartridge, even after cleaning with warm water with a drop of dish soap. I then filled the converter with Diamine oxblood and now it works fine.

I also had the problem with a Lamy Al-Star with a medium nib. I tried rinsing it out, etc., etc., but still couldn't get the ink to flow without a lot of hub-bub. Finally took it back to the store and exchanged it; store manager couldn't get it to go, either - but the replacement pen works well.

Ahh, that clears it up for me! :P And in order to tate, you have to be impotent at the time, too? No worries for me, as I am a woman, but still.... (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Will not write at all?

Or will not write like I expect it to?

Hi, The Safari Vista plus the 1.1mm nib could be my most used pen, a really good combination for me.

This is my second one, as I lost the first one on the bus a few years ago.

Hope the person that found it, used it as much as I had.

I have found a meaning for TATE as a noun.

A male, usually very athletic. This person is usually tall, but can be short. A Tate also has amazing eyes, and hair. This person is very funny, and brightens up your day. The male, Tate, is also a very smart, and honest person! They are a cute and adorable person that everyone loves!

I also found it as a word for Cheat as in "to cheat on an exam" is "to TATE on an exam".

I am guessing that either there is a vulgar meaning of which I am not aware, not unlikely, but that probably would have shown up on Google, or maybe it means to "cheat" the NIB by manually priming it with water or ink....

Totally guessing. Sorry, I usually don't get these things until they are described to me.

sorry..

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
