Twsbi [Color 540] Is Here~

Does this batch come with the Bock nibs? I want to order one with a fine nib but have heard the med is the same size as a normal fine for other pens.... so i'm a little confused as to which size to order...

If I heard right, the switch to Back nibs will be only with the 540 Demonstrators/Clear. They are due later in February. So, the current coloured batch don't come with Bock nibs.

To write Chinese characters with all those little strokes (for instance, 麻雀) require finer nibs. Therefore a medium asian nib is closer to a fine Western nib.

Asian M = Western F

Asian F = Western EF

Asian EF = Western EEF

As 540 Clear, only B nib is from Bock. The others are Schmidt nibs.

Pardon a possible dumb question: does the nib unit for a 540 fit with the 530?

I've wanted a stub for my TWSBI for quite a while, and here they are on the ebay store site today. Just gotta make sure a 540's stub fits my 530.

Any suggestions as to what's better for daily use writing: the 1.1 Stub or the 1.5?

Thanks very much!

Yes, the 540 nib fits in a 530. 1.1mm Stub is better for daily use, usually, and for most people. I don't know those nibs, because they vary their tips width, depending on the brand. Some say that Stipula 1.1mm is more like 1.3mm. But my personal choice is 1.5mm.

For some reason I thought we were getting the same blue and orange as in the 530. I can see the Amber is nothing like the orange already. Does anybody else have a feeling the 530 Blue and 540 Sapphire are different? They don't look the same to me based on my 530 in hand and the pics I am seeing of the 540.

ETA: For me, it's the Smoke in broad. :)

@Scylax, @vistafan Coloured 540s and stub nib assemblies will be available next month. TWSBI is closed for Chinese New Year celebrations, hence the slight delay. Keep an eye on our FB and Twitter feeds for details.

thanks,

Martin

Thanks - I shall watch with eager anticipation! Of course, I've totally blown my pen budget lately - just as well I made it clear that when the new TWSBI's arrived I'd still want one no matter what, so at least my family can't complain too much! :) Seriously, though, I'm excited! I've grown more and more fond of my 540 ROC as I use it. The size, the weight, the massive ink capacity and the nib, plus it looks fantastic, and it's a great price, what's not to love?

important nib question (speedy?):

with the switch to bock nibs for the coloured 540, is there any reason to expect the extra-fine (EF) nib might now produce a thinner line than the original 530/540 extra-fine?

from older reviews, i understood that the original 530/540 extra-fine nibs produced "western" extra-fine lines (e.g., like a pelikan extra-fine) -- meaning, not as thin as a typical japanese fine or extra-fine (e.g., a pilot fine/extra-fine nib).

thanks very much -- and speedy: very nice work on this, and congratulations on getting this product out and receiving so much positive response so quickly.

I'm not Speedy of course and have no real authority on this issue, but I would not expect switching from one German nib to another German nib would lead to performance akin to a Japanese nib. I would love to see Japanese-style F and EF nibs for TWSBI, but it does not seem likely, since they are using German nibs.

I want to get a 1.1 Stub but have burnt a big hole in my pocket over the last week (indicated by 5 pens in the mail)

In case someone would like to buy a Lamy Safari clear or Lime Green in order to help fund my TWSBI purchase please PM me :)

When someone got then, what about a comparison between Schmidt nib/feed and Bock nib/twsbi feed?

yes, that's what i would have thought, all else being equal. i just wondered (hoped) if there might be some slight differences (in the finer direction). interested to hear/see people's experiences once they start receiving their new coloured 540s.

Hi Speedy, thanks for clarify this. Indeed, when I placed my order for the smoke one, I didn't know that and was quite guilty for ordering another EF 540 just for the different color. But now, it's great to know that information and I can justify to buy another EF 540, as I want to see the different between bock and schmidt nib. :P

Look forward to receiving the smoke!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
