Repair Of Writer's Edition

Deacon Blues

Recommended Posts

My Writer's Edition had a scratchy nib (audibly) for some unknown reason. Took it to the local Montblanc Boutique store.

They sent it to Texas repair a few weeks ago.

Just got a call. Texas repair can't fix it, has to go back to Germany for repair (not under warranty).

Kind of curious as to what to expect. The nib is an M. I would prefer a BB instead.

Does anyone have any experience with the cost of replacing a W.E. nib as opposed to repair? Is it a huge price difference?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Depending on how old your WE is, MB does not usually keep nib of different or identical sizes available for replacement especially if it have been too long after the production run.

MB will investigate the scratchy M nib and make it more smooth for you. Not sure about the cost. Could be complimentary or could cost $$$.

After you get it back, maybe you could send the pen to a nib master can turn it into a BB. Others can chime in for additional suggestions.

I was recently quote $250+ US at a Montblanc Boutique for a nib exchange (a 149, not a WE pen). The reason they said 250+ is because they would not guarantee a price. Only the factory can provide a firm price, but they will provide a firm estimate for your approval if requested.

I agree with s5blitzer. Since all of your issues/requests involve the nib, I would get it back and send it to an independent MB nibmeister.

I was asked 215GBP to replace a nib on a WE. I know prices are fixed and change between country, so I'm not sure how much it will be over there.. I suppose it will be cheaper (and eventually better) to send it to a nib meister to get it re-tipped. I love Richard Binder's creations...

+1 for s5blitzer, sending to MB in Germany could cost a lot and with WE depends how old it is.

I would go for a really good nibmeister who will discuss your requirements.

I've got some idea of the prices from the nibmeisters, so I think I have a firm grip on that. I always figure in the expedite fee as part of the repair cost, so it can be a bit costly.

And I know there will be a significant wait with the turnaround time for MB, so I'm prepared for that as well.

I guess my question is really the cost of repair vs. the cost of replacement (with a different nib size) through MB. I've never had work done by them before, and I'm curious.

My discussion with the boutique was: get me a price quote for the repair and then a time / cost estimate for a new nib in a different size. If they are too out of line, I can have them just return it to me.

I like the pen a lot (it's the Poe), but I like the idea of getting a BB on it. Guess I'm just trying to ease some anxiety.

My Faulkner WE is currently back at MB Germany to have its nib changed from M to OBB. The cost was US $265. The transaction is being handled by my local MB Boutique.

Hi there,

I am also sending back a writers edition for a nib exchange, not repair and I was concerned about availability of nibs etc because mine is an old WE pen. Basically, it has to be sent through your boutique to Hamburg, and if the nib is damaged beyond repair, Montblanc can make a new nib for you if none are in stock. They keep the original prototypes and can make new ones even for the oldest WE.

The price might be high - I am also waiting on a quote before I send mine.

What you resist persists, what you fight you strengthen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
