Just a quick question: was wondering if anyone has managed to pry off and replace the clasp that holds the elastic bands in place on their Midori TNs? Am asking this, as I wanted to add a second elastic band to one of my Midori notebooks, so I can add more refills - so any help / info would be awesome!!

But wait, there are already two elastics in there! One is in a slightly different position but it does have sufficient slack to hold a second refill.

You can add a third elastic by making another set of holes in the spine area and using another piece of elastic (from their repair kit) and tying it off on the inside. This way you won't have to mess around with the clasp.

Another alternative is putting the additional (third) refill on the outside of an existing one -- essentially doubling up on one elastic. The downside to this is that the two halves of the refill will be separated by the refill inside of it.

A myriad of options!

Thanks for the advice, OC - the reason I asked is that I was not only tempted to add another elastic band to hold in a third refill, but I also was tempted to change the elastic for a colour that doesn't come in the repair kit (I have a bunch of white elastic I wanted to use). Was gonna use another to hold the TN shut too...

Like you said, a myriad of options.. :)

Doesn't the Repair Kit come with an extra tin clasp? So if you break the original one prying it apart to add a third cord, then you can replace it with the extra clasp in the Repair Kit. Right?

  • 3 years later...

It has been a few years since you all lucky folks acquired the Midori Traveler's Notebook 5th Anniversary Edition. I can't help but think that maybe, just maybe, some of you may have brushed it aside and moved to other systems.

If that is the case, would you be willing to part with your TN 5th Anniversary Edition? Please let me know.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
