WOW! a full Esterbrook dip pen display! the desk set is a 444 Dipless (dip-less than a dip pen! :P ). the dipless is essentially a dip pen with a feed under the nib, acting as a huge reservoir.

Any idea what year the display is from? What I do know is that the old man that owned it had a publishing place that's been in business since 1868

And his great grandfather opened it and his grandpa is the one who bought this back in the day. The glass and case are in amazing condition

late 1800's to the early 1900's i guess, as nibs are still referred to as pens.

The pen looks like a dip-less dip pen.

Which numbers of dip pen nibs did you get? Esterbrook dip nibs are lots of fun to write with. One thing you should know (since you're new to this) is that never-before-used dip nibs often have an invisible protective coating that needs to be washed off before the nib will write properly. Otherwise your ink will blob.

That would explain the blobbing. . I was wondering a out that I've been very accurate with the pressure I've been writing with

(I'm a tattoo artist hand control is what I do for a living) thanks for the tip. . . One sec ill post what nibs I have. . .

I personally pass my nibs quickly through a candle flame to remove the coating but there are those who do not approve of that practice for some reason. :headsmack:

What other ways besides using a candle is there to remove the coating?

Washing and then drying the nibs works. BTW, steel dip pen nibs will rust. They were also considered disposable and after a while they will stop writing nicely -- they'll snag and the like -- and you'll need to use a fresh one. That's why nibs were sold in boxes of 144.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
