High Price Water Mark for "Equi-poised Pen?

Lets take a look at the Upper End of the Wahl Eversharp value spectrum for a moment. Tonight, a pen auctioneed off on eBay for a rather high sum. It is a pen that, as far as we know, never appeared in a Wahl Eversharp Catalog, never appeared in any Wahl-Eversharp advertising, and although urban legend declares it to be a "transitional Equi-poised" pen no one has so far been able to prove that either. The pen is the subject of speculation and controversy.

The Urban Legend is that this pen was hastily thrown together by Wahl-Evershasrp as a demonstration to the Sheaffer Pen Company that Wahl Eversharp had really ceased to produce their Sheaffer Balance look-alike Equi-poised pen introduced in 1929. The construction of these seemingly (to some) cobbled together pens included construction elements not seen on Wahl-Eversharp pens before or after. One such element is that the end extensions are held in place by little brass screws from inside. Another is that the barrel and cap below these end pieces are dimentionally the same as the large Gold Seal pens then still in current production. The other side of the Urban Legend controversy consists primarly of those who simply say that no one can prove this oral tradition. The objectivists in the Wahl-Eversharp Community simply say "Prove it."

There is a lot to be said about this pen and forensically one can make a pretty good case for the urban legend. The production period for these pens was speculatively very short. Maybe 4 to 6 months by some accounts. Regardless, the pen attracts very high bids every time a nice one comes out of hiding.

Take a look at this ebay listing before the pictures are withdrawn. It is a good looking example of this pen:

Is this the most any of you have ever seen one of these pens go for? Do you know of another Wahl Eversharp pen that has sold for more? Is this the High Water Mark for the brand?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
