Hi Syd & Maja!

Congratulations Syd on taking on the Wahl Forum moderation! I know its already been said, but you are the Wahl/Eversharp mavin and who better to lead this than you. And thanks to Maja for bringing this forum to my attention...I had posted some metal Wahl pens on Pentrace recently and Maja suggested I post them here too.

I've got quite a few metal Wahls, including the "Brain Pattern" model and nice a assortment of ring tops. Just picked up a plain (smooth) GF ring top that was made in Canada and the nib is imprinted:

WAHL EVERSHARP

2 14K

FLEXIBLE

This is the only smooth one I've ever found in gold filled. Have to say, Wahl has one of the most eye-catching arrays of designs on metal pens...this is one of the things that has always attracted me to them!

The first pen in my pic is a Gold-Filled Skyline with a wide vertical ribbing that is on cap & barrel. This came from a WWII Vet that was a customer of mine and died in the Phoenix Veteran's Hospital. I always kidded around about him leaving it to me in his will...and he did (one pen I'll never part with!).

The others have their stories, but this one is the most poignant, so enjoy the beauty that is Wahl (& Eversharp)!

Ooooh, what i'll show you next week. In meanwhile...

Man...

In 27 years of collecting, I've never come across a metal Wahl desk pen!

Cool look, is there a nice base to go with that booty, err... ...I mean beauty?

Looks like some beautiful bling to me! Are metal Wahls common? What are values like for the ones pictured?

If'n ya'd BROUGHT the dang box with you...

Don't even try it. I brought the box -- it's how I transport the set. You didn't want to change your photo setup or some such lame excuse...

Here is the complete all metal desk pen set that you asked for. This is from the very first series of desk pens that Wahl experimented with on one Christmas Season in 1926. I have the series of ads that ran in the Saturday Evening Post as well as the page from the 1926 "mini" catalog tht came out in time for dealers to order these items for their 1926 Christmas business. It was enough of a hit that they went forward with desk pen sets in earnest. The array of desk pens available proliferated when by 1929 there were a huge number of sets produced and offered for sale. Wahl contracted with stone suppliers in the US, Argentina and Italy. And, by the 1930's they made Doric desk pens built into desk lamps and in 1933-4 a full 7-piece Desk set made for them by Sterling including desk blottter holder, ash tray, address directory, note pad, desk pen with perpetual calendar, desk note tray! That was a Doric set from 1934. here is one of the 6 desk sets that started it all.

I only have about 160 Wahl desk sets, so more pictures will be coming along when and if we focus on Desk sets as a whole.

Are Skyline desk sets scarce and/or desirable? I passed on a base (no pen) recently.

Daniel,

They are not particularly rare, but they are not as prevalent as Sheaffer sets from the same era, for example. The shape of the "humidor" on the Skyline desk sets is way cool. I believe desk sets are the sleeper value in vintage writing instruments. You get all the writing pleaseure of a very good pen and nib at a much lower cost these days. I don't know about you or other letter writers, but I use the fountain pen most in writing letters and I do most of that at home and at a desk...so do I really have to carry my letter writer in my shirt pocket? I have a good supply of Skyline era desk pens looking for holders one day, so it is not too tough to find a pen for a loose holder. It is good to know the aperture of the humidor when looking for the matching pen cause they were not all the sme size.

Shari, Syd and Daniel....what lovely pens! Thanks for posting!

Shari, your pen looks like the pen that is on the far left of the Penhero.com article on Wahl's machine-engraved patterns! I love the MHR section. I haven't seen many of those on Ebay!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
