Mont sound like the "mon" in monster and Blanc as in "ball-long" (say it very fast). I don't think you pronounce the t in Mont but you do say the "c" in Blanc like a k, "ka / ca"... Someone may correct me but thats approximately how I've been saying it.

Mont Blanc (two words) is the highest summit in Europe at 4,810 m, straddling the French / Italian border, and is pronounced in French without the t or the c and with each word having the same vowel sound. Because "Mont Blanc" is a proper noun in French of a place in France, it should, most strictly speaking, be pronounced the same in any language as it is pronounced in French. In reality, that strictly proper rule is often ignored. The c is often pronounced by English speakers as a hard c (or a k), but the t is usually silent in English, just as it is silent in French.

Montblanc (one word) is a luxury pen, watch, and leather goods company based in Hamburg. Their logo is the white star representing the six glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif. In English, the t is usually silent and the c is usually pronounced as a hard c (or a k). In English, the two syllables have the same vowel sound. The number 4,810 figures prominently in company lore, is inscribed on the nib of the company's pens, and is often used to denominate the size of limited editions.

Try to pronounce it while you eat a madeleine. Alternatively a regular muffin might work as well.

Language is all about being understood.

IMHO if you say mont blonk you will be understood. (I would rhyme it with plonk rather than spank)

As Ray points out, even though it represents a French mountain, it's a German pen.

This page gives audio pronunciation samples by native speakers from several regions.

The pen company was named after the French mountain, and it's indeed one of (few) French words most Germans will get approximately right. (They might even be understood when asking for a MB in a French pen shop.)

Half French, half Italian. :P

In the spirit of ethnic solidarity, then, I shall henceforth pronounce Mont Blanc as "Monte Bianco."

Mountain and pen are pronounced the same way in Germany. Or at least we try... ;)

Ok ok, so let's say the whole pen company was after a French half-mountain. And their pens aren't wholly half bad. Or is that too clever by half?

No Mah Bliah, Mo Blo, mon blun or whatever.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
