It's cooler by the lake!

or so they say to explain why spring by Lake Michigan starts 2 weeks later than spring 15 miles inland.

Greetings to you all from Milwaukee! I'm new to this network and this is my first post.

I collect all manner of oddball things, like old currency, bank commemorative medallions, old coin banks and, now, am a fledgling in fountain pens. This looks like a similar group of modestly twisted, hopefully to be tolerated collectors.

My 'flagship' pen is a green Namiki Impressions fine nib, that I found locally about a year ago after looking for a long time. I recently picked up the sapphire Impressions pencil on an online auction. My everyday pens are two Watermans--a Hemisphere fine nib and a Phileas medium nib. I am also using an old cheapo Parker fountain pen for writing in red. I think my next pen purchase will probably be a Pelikan 400.

Hope to continue enjoying reading posts on this network for sometime to come!!

Greetings Brooke and Welcome to FPN.

yup, we are modestly twisted!

Namiki's rank high on my list as far as FPs go. Though I only have two and they are their "low end" pens (VP and Falcon). Great pens, both.

Look forward to seeing you on the board.

Hi Brooke,

Welcome to this place of oddballs and nutcases, much like the previous poster! Namikis are great pens, as are Watermans. Now you just have to try some slightly higher end Stipulas, and you're all set :D.

Warm regards, Wim

Hi all,

Thanks for the quick replies--gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over. [hopefully, people tolerate irreverant comments--never intended to offend--my upfront legal disclaimer]

Stipulas, hmmm. Thanks for the suggestion Wim. I'm also intrigued by Sailors (without all the tatoos, of course) -- the rounded bullet shape (that's how I would discribe it, not being too intuned yet into pen-speak) of the 1911 is very attractive. The music nib looks like it would be fun to write with.

Can y'all give recommendations on online retailers to buy from and who to avoid?

And what's with all of these smiley things here? If someone says something you don't like, do you insert the bunny's butt?? :bunny1:

And how do you add the pictures to postings?

Thanks all -- show patience for those of us who are less wise and worldly, please!!

Hi Brooke and welcome to FPN :D

I too have a Phileas with a medium nib (mine writes more like a broad-nibbed pen, but I like it) and like KCat, I have a Namiki VP that I love using. Pelikan pens are great, so I am sure you will enjoy your 400 when you get one...Enjoy!

Maja--I agree, my Phileas medium nib also seems like a broad nib--so I often use it for signatures. My Waterman Hemishere fine nib seems more like a medium nib. Hmmm--maybe a theme here for Watermans. . . .

Thanks for the clarification, Elaine, and the info on posting pictures. I promise, nothing of me doing a happy dance (or of my backside!!)

Hi again Brooke,

Sorry I didn't answer the smiley and photo posting question you had asked just above my last post; I didn't notice them until now! (thanks, Elaine for providing the answers to Brooke)

I've sent you a PM (personal message) via FPN telling you about my experiences with online sellers...and almost all have been excellent experiences :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
